There is a very strong chance that Kamala Harris will replace Joe Biden and run for president in 2024.
Harris just got an early leg up on that endeavor.
And a judge just handed down a major ruling that left Kamala Harris smiling from ear to ear.
Democrats are worried that Kamala Harris cannot defeat Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis in a potential 2024 matchup.
DeSantis saw his star rise after he rejected mask mandates, kept schools and businesses open, and also banned vaccine passports in the state.
A Harris versus DeSantis matchup would allow the American people to hold a referendum on the pandemic by having the two parties nominate one candidate in Harris – who supports lockdowns, mask mandates and vaccine passports, and another candidate – DeSantis – who believes life can go on as normal – to square off.
Democrats hope to turn DeSantis’ strength – steering Florida through the pandemic while keeping the state open – into a weakness.
Federal Judge Kathleen Williams – who Barack Obama appointed in 2011 –issued a temporary injunction allowing Norwegian Cruise Line to implement a vaccine passport requirement for staff and passengers in defiance of Florida law.
Norwegian Cruise Line attorney Derek Shaffer cited the seasonal surge in Florida’s coronavirus case count to justify the company’s vaccine passport mandate.
“It’s scary what’s happening in Florida,” Shaffer stated. “All of Florida is a hot spot … All we’re doing is trying to protect our staff and passengers.”
Williams agreed and allowed the cruise line to mandate staff and passengers show proof of vaccination while the case heads to trial.
Norwegian CEO Frank Del Rio praised the decision.
“The health and safety of our guests, crew and the communities we visit is our number one priority, today, tomorrow and forever,” Del Rio stated. “It’s not a slogan or a tagline, we fiercely mean it and our commitment to these principles is demonstrated by the lengths our Company has gone through to provide the safest possible cruise experience from Florida.”
Florida attorney Pete Patterson argued vaccine passports are an illegal form of discrimination.
“You can’t discriminate against customers on the basis of their refusal to give you information,” Patterson argued.
Democrats want to shift the narrative surrounding DeSantis’ management of the pandemic from a success story of following the data, protecting the vulnerable while balancing economic growth and a functioning society against public health into a reckless cowboy who got people killed because of hardheaded ideological entrenchment.
Williams’ order allowing Norwegian Cruise Line to impose a vaccine passport in defiance of Florida state law is one step Democrats hope will be a successful information war against DeSantis.
