Vice President Kamala Harris – like Joe Biden – cannot avoid bad news.
Now a scandal from her past resurfaced and it could not have happened at a worse time.
And one murder suspect’s arrest posed this huge problem for Kamala Harris.
A man bailed out by a group that Kamala Harris once raised money for on social media now stands accused of murder.
George Howard, 48 years old, allegedly shot and killed a man during a road rage incident in Minneapolis.
Surveillance camera footage showed 38-year-old Luis Damian Martinez Ortiz confronting Howard on an Interstate 94 entrance ramp.
Ortiz allegedly punched Howard and then fell to the ground at which point he crawled back into his car and drove himself to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
On August 29, prosecutors charged Howard with two counts of second-degree murder in relation to this shooting.
This is where the story turns to Kamala Harris and the controversial Minnesota Freedom Fund.
Harris tweeted out a link to raise money for the fund last June when the MFF paid bail for rioters arrested in the violence and terrorist attacks in Minneapolis following George Floyd’s death.
“If you’re able to, chip in now to the @MNFreedomFund to help post bail for those protesting on the ground in Minnesota,” then-Senator Harris posted on social media while also including the group’s donation link.
The MFF paid $11,500 in bail to free Howard on August 6 after police arrested Howard on domestic violence charges.
An MFF spokesman defended its practices of paying bond for accused criminals and noted it was under new leadership.
“We are aware of reports of the tragic and fatal shooting in Minneapolis earlier this week allegedly involving George Howard, an individual the Minnesota Freedom Fund had previously provided with bail support,” a statement read. “MFF believes that every individual who has been arrested by the law enforcement is innocent until proven guilty, and if a judge deems them eligible for bail, they should not have to wait in jail simply because they don’t have the same income or access to resources as others.”
“Under new leadership, MFF has implemented changes to its policies and procedures, and we will continue to assess them to ensure that we are being responsive to the safety and needs of our community,” a second statement read.
Howard is not the first accused criminal freed by the MFF who later went on to commit violent crimes.
Weeks after Harris promoted the group on social media and raised money for them with her tweet, the group paid bail for 32-year-old Lionel Timms.
In August, police arrested Timms after he allegedly beat a man in an alley so savagely that the victim suffered traumatic brain injury.
Republican attacks on Democrats for being soft on crime found their mark in the 2020 election.
GOP candidates won every single tossup race on the map for the House of Representatives.
Democrats hoped to avoid a similar outcome next year.
But Kamala Harris’ support for the MFF will ensure that line of attack does not disappear.
