Washington loves a good scandal.
But now the two most combustible elements of a political crisis combined.
And a wild story about sex and drugs has this big-name congressman on the hot seat.
Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz continues to face accusations about his personal life.
The latest salvo came from The New York Times claimed Gaetz and his political ally Joel Greenberg paid women recruited off an online website for sex.
“A Justice Department investigation into Representative Matt Gaetz and an indicted Florida politician is focusing on their involvement with multiple women who were recruited online for sex and received cash payments, according to people close to the investigation and text messages and payment receipts reviewed by The New York Times,” The New York Times reported.
Greenberg was indicted on sex trafficking charges and the Times claims investigators are examining if the cash, gifts, travel and dinner expenses were in exchange for sex.
“Investigators believe Joel Greenberg, the former tax collector in Seminole County, Fla., who was indicted last year on a federal sex trafficking charge and other crimes, initially met the women through websites that connect people who go on dates in exchange for gifts, fine dining, travel and allowances, according to three people with knowledge of the encounters. Mr. Greenberg introduced the women to Mr. Gaetz, who also had sex with them, the people said,” the Times added.
At some of these rendezvous, some of the individuals also reported taking mind-altering drugs such as ecstasy.
“Some of the men and women took ecstasy, an illegal mood-altering drug, before having sex, including Mr. Gaetz, two people familiar with the encounters said,” the Times added.
But one giant red flag in the story is the idea that investigators are still trying to determine if Gaetz had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl.
“The Justice Department inquiry is also examining whether Mr. Gaetz had sex with a 17-year-old girl and whether she received anything of material value, according to four people familiar with the investigation. The sex trafficking count against Mr. Greenberg involved the same girl, according to two people briefed on the investigation,” the Times added.
This should be a fact that is easy to confirm.
Either the girl is 17 or she is not.
Either she and Gaetz had an illegal relationship or they didn’t.
When this story first broke, Gaetz claimed the Biden Department of Justice is trying to frame him.
After this latest story Gaetz strongly denied all the allegations against him.
“Matt Gaetz has never paid for sex,” a statement from Gaetz’s office read. “Matt Gaetz refutes all the disgusting allegations completely. Matt Gaetz has never ever been on any such websites whatsoever. Matt Gaetz cherishes the relationships in his past and looks forward to marrying the love of his life.”
