Democrats are engaged in a fight for control of the party.
Up until now, former President Barack Obama was the unquestioned leader of the Democrat Party.
But Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez left Barack Obama speechless with this one demand.
Barack Obama finally made his presence known in the 2020 campaign.
During a recent public appearance, Obama made it clear that the Democrats running for president that are embracing socialism like the so-called “Green New Deal” and a communist health care takeover render the party unelectable in 2020.
“Even as we push the envelope and we are bold in our vision we also have to be rooted in reality,” Obama warned. “The average American doesn’t think we have to completely tear down the system and remake it.”
Obama cautioned Democrats that just yelling their ideas louder and for longer will not force the American people to accept a socialist takeover.
“I don’t think we should be deluded into thinking that the resistance to certain approaches to things is simply because voters haven’t heard a bold enough proposal and if they hear something as bold as possible then immediately that’s going to activate them,” Obama added.
That did not sit well with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Ocasio-Cortez is a self-identified socialist and – along with her fellow “Squad” members Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar – endorsed socialist Senator Bernie Sanders for president.
The three members of the “Squad” endorsed Sanders’ presidential bid precisely because Sanders promised a socialist revolution.
And Ocasio-Cortez was not content to sit silently on the sidelines because of a warning from Barack Obama.
“The party of the Civil Rights Act, the one that electrified this nation and fights for all people. For that, many would call us radical. But we aren’t ‘pushing the party left,’ we are bringing the party home,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote in response to Obama’s remarks.
Ocasio-Cortez also tweeted a video of a Sanders campaign commercial where Ocasio-Cortez repeats her call to arms for a radical remaking of American life.
“This is about a people’s movement in the United States, and this campaign is a part of that and electing Bernie Sanders is the beginning of a transformational movement in the ‘direction of working people in America,’” Ocasio-Cortez declared.
This is the first time since Barack Obama secured the party’s nomination for President back in 2008 that another Democrat stood up and took him on.
Even if Ocasio-Cortez never referenced Obama’s name in her tweet, it was clear to all political observers that Ocasio-Cortez rebuked Obama with those comments.
Barack Obama was a radical, anti-American socialist at heart.
But the new generation of Democrats like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sneer at Obama and other party officials that followed his lead as spineless incrementalists that did not push the country far enough towards socialism.
This exchange shows that Obama and other past party elders are losing their grip on power and extremists like Ocasio-Cortez are seizing the reins.
