Democrats can always count on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to make things worse.
The New York congresswoman committed another blunder right at a time when the roof is caving in on Democrats nationally.
And Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez went off script and doomed Democrats with this gaffe.
One of the big stories coming out of the 2020 election was the realignment of working-class Hispanic voters into the Republican Party.
A Pew post-election survey found Donald Trump won 38 percent of the Hispanic vote.
Trump saw massive gains in the heavily Hispanic Rio Grande Valley counties.
This shift was no fluke.
This spring Mayra Flores won a special election in a Texas congressional district that is 84 percent Hispanic.
And some polls show Florida Governor Ron DeSantis winning a majority of the Hispanic vote in Latino-dominated Miami-Dade County, a formerly Democrat stronghold.
During an appearance on “Pod Save America” Ocasio-Cortez tried to spin the Democrats’ potentially apocalyptic loss of support from Hispanic voters.
But instead of pointing the party on a pathway forward Ocasio-Cortez doubled down on the failed strategy that pushed the party to the brink.
“I can at least say with Latino voters, we’ve never tried as a party. The Democratic Party has not tried in terms of Latino electorates,” Ocasio-Cortez stated.
Ocasio-Cortez claimed working-class Hispanic voters trended right because Democrats failed to deliver on amnesty.
“Where’s our DREAM Act? Where is our immigration reform?” Ocasio-Cortez added.
This makes no sense.
Donald Trump ran on building a border wall and opposing amnesty.
Hispanic voters aren’t upset Democrats did not pass amnesty so they drifted towards an immigration restrictionist.
Instead, it was Democrats’ support for open borders, socialism and defunding the police that accelerated the political realignment.
To make matters worse, Ocasio-Cortez then leaned into the Big Lie that Democrats tell that Republicans plan to destroy democracy and impose fascism on America.
“The stakes of this midterm are so incredibly high. If Republicans take the House, they have stated in no unclear terms that they intend to support a national criminal abortion ban, that they want to hold the United States economy hostage in order to gut Social Security and Medicare,” Ocasio-Cortez continued.
“What I had to really tell her was, ‘Listen, I’m not going to tell you not to worry. I think we need to work really, really hard because we are still very much at this very critical precipice of fascism in this country and that’s very, very real,” Ocasio-Cortez concluded.
Democrats are losing ground with Hispanic voters not because of racism or misinformation.
Democrats alienated Hispanic voters because they focus on issues their donors care about – amnesty, January 6, etc. – and ignore the problems voters want their leaders to address like rising crime, inflation, and open borders.
