The Democrats’ Presidential primary is a mess.
Top party leaders remain skeptical of the idea any of the current candidates can beat Donald Trump and are looking for new candidates to jump into the race.
And then all hell broke loose when Ilhan Omar made this 2020 announcement.
Political pundits wrote off Bernie Sanders’ Presidential campaign after the Vermont Senator saw his poll numbers flatten out as Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren surged to the frontrunner position.
Sanders also suffered a heart attack that took him off the trail for a week.
The “experts” thought voters viewed Sanders as a retread candidate from 2016 and had moved to kick the tires of newer and fresher candidates.
But in the span of three weeks Sanders’ fortunes turned around.
Sanders raised the most money in the Democrat Presidential field in the third quarter.
And his campaign received a shocking jolt of energy when three of the four members of the “Squad” – Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib – endorsed his candidacy.
The “Squad” backing Sanders – as well as their reasons for doing so – sent shivers down the spines of top Democrats.
At a campaign event in Minnesota, Omar made it clear she supported Sanders as part of a socialist takeover of the Democrat Party as much – or if not more so – than the fact that they thought Sanders was the best candidate to win the election.
“Here’s the cold truth: We can’t achieve any of these goals if we don’t build a movement that is representative of all of our aspirations, all of our pain, and all of our shared trauma,” Omar raged. “That is why we must build a mass movement of the working class that transcends faith, age, gender, and background.”
“That’s what we fight for here in Minnesota every single day and that’s the movement that Senator Bernie Sanders is building,” the Minnesota Democrat added. “Bernie knows that systematic change in this country has never taken place without millions of people organizing to demand that change.”
Omar cast Sanders’ Presidential campaign in the same light as past movements that brought about massive social change in America.
“That is the history of the labor movement, the history of the women’s liberation movement, that is the history of the civil rights movement, and the LGBTQ movement, and the disability rights under equal justice movement,” the freshman Minnesota Congresswoman added.
The “Squad” backing Sanders because he is the vessel for the ideological movement means Sanders will take his campaign to the very last primary.
While the ‘Squad” hopes Sanders wins the race, they are backing Sanders because he is their best bet to mobilize voters around a movement to install a socialist regime in the United States.
That means not only will Sanders drag the entire primary field to the left, but by staying in the race until the convention, Sanders will make it that much more difficult for the Democrats to reassemble their voter coalition after a bruising primary fight.
