Donald Trump introduced social distancing guidelines to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
These measures ground the economy to a halt as Americans hunkered down to do their part to help curb the outbreak.
And now all hell broke loose when Trump made this coronavirus announcement.
Nationwide shutdowns and mitigation efforts are a short-term strategy.
The government cannot hit the pause button on the economy forever.
If people stay inside for months there will be no economy to return to.
When jobs vanish and tens or hundreds of millions of Americans see there is no money to put food in the pantry, there could be civil unrest the likes of which the nation has never seen.
Donald Trump understands all of this.
That’s why the President began the pivot toward discussing when and under what circumstances the country could restart its economic engine.
“Our people want to return to work. They will practice Social Distancing and all else, and Seniors will be watched over protectively & lovingly. We can do two things together. THE CURE CANNOT BE WORSE (by far) THAN THE PROBLEM! Congress MUST ACT NOW. We will come back strong!” the President wrote on social media.
The President doubled down on this sentiment in a town hall with Fox News where the President revealed for the first time he would like to see the economy restart by Easter Sunday, which is April 12.
“I’d love to have it open by Easter,” the President told the Fox News audience.
“I would love to have the country opened up and rearing to go by Easter,” the President continued.
President Trump made sure in a press briefing later that same day to reiterate that any decision to reopen the economy would be targeted based on how areas were affected by the coronavirus and based on the recommendations of the medical experts.
The President was not the only elected official to start to discuss how the economy could reopen.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo – whose state has half the total number of coronavirus cases – also explained in a press conference that the government would need to plan for some way to get Americans back to work.
“Let the younger people go back to work, let the recovered people go back to work,” Cuomo told the press. “Ramp up the economy with those individuals.”
Cuomo echoed Trump that the government can manage the health crisis by instituting a targeted and intelligent plan to ease up on social distancing requirements while still fighting the spread of the coronavirus.
“So you’re refining your public health strategy and at the same time you’re restarting your economy,” Cuomo added. “Those two can be consistent if done intelligently.”
Some liberal pundits and fake news media members want to keep the lockdowns in place for months on end.
It’s easy for them to say.
They aren’t missing a paycheck.
