Democrats are getting desperate.
Party officials see their chances of victory in 2020 slipping away and they are desperate to reverse those fortunes.
But matters took a turn for the worse when Barack Obama made one phone call. What happened sent Democrats running for their lives.
Former Vice President Joe Biden’s smashing 30 point victory in the South Carolina primary positioned Biden as the establishment alternative to socialist Senator – and current Democrat Party Presidential frontrunner – Bernie Sanders.
Democrat Party elites quickly closed ranks around Biden.
Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar suspended their campaigns and endorsed Biden.
They were joined by establishment pillars former Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe and former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
Dozens of Congressional Democrats and mayors also lined up behind Biden.
But the biggest name in the Democrat Party continued to sit the race out.
Former President Barack Obama called Biden to congratulate his former sidekick on winning his first election outside the state of Delaware in three presidential campaigns spanning more than three decades.
However, fake news CNN reporter Jeff Zeleny revealed that on the phone call Obama told Biden he was not endorsing Biden during the primary.
Zeleny reported that, “A person close to Obama told CNN that the former president’s view has not changed: He has no immediate plans to offer an endorsement of Biden — or anyone — as the nominating contest heads into Super Tuesday.”
Sources close to Obama told Zeleny that Obama recognized the current political reality – that Bernie Sanders was clearly the frontrunner with the best chance to win the most delegates heading into the convention – and Obama did not want to put his prestige on the line by endorsing Biden when Biden was no sure thing to defeat Sanders.
“We are skeptical that an endorsement coming from us could truly change the political winds right now,” the person close to Obama told CNN. If Obama were to endorse Biden, the person said, there is “a very real chance it backfires,” Zeleny also wrote.
Democrats are likely to head to their convention in Milwaukee this summer with no candidate owning enough delegates to win the nomination in the first ballot.
All eyes will turn to Obama to provide guidance to if the delegates should agree to a compromise in selecting a nominee from the current pool of candidates or look to a “unity candidate” savior such as Michelle Obama to piece a fractured party back together.
“He feels that he’s singularly positioned to help unify the party at the end of this,” the Obama confidant said. “And if he were to try to put his thumb on the scale now, it would take away his ability to do so when it’s most needed — the general election.”
In either scenario, the Democrats risk alienating Sanders supporters who view the establishment ganging up on their candidate to steal the nomination from the rightful winner.
Obama recognizes that Sanders has the best chance of winning the most delegates and that he needs to stay out of the race if he is to broker an honorable peace at the convention.
