In many ways Barack Obama is still the leader of the Democrat Party.
But now Democrats got some bad news.
And that’s because Barack Obama made this concession that left Democrats with only one thing left to say.
Barack Obama was all set to throw himself a 60th birthday bash fitting for a member of the royal family.
Obama signed up A-list rock group Pearl Jam to play the party.
500 guests – including celebrities Steven Spielberg, Oprah, and George Clooney – accepted invitations to attend.
And the Obamas hired 200 servants to dote on their guests to make sure trays of food were always present and no one’s drink glass was empty for even one second.
But the Obama birthday extravaganza ran up against an inconvenient political reality.
Democrats won the presidency and control of the Senate in 2020 in large part because of the pandemic.
Next year Democrats think the pandemic is their best chance to hang on to power as an inflation crisis, a border crisis and jobs crisis leave the party with few cards to play.
Republicans accused the Biden administration of trying to impose a state of permanent pandemic emergency when Joe Biden announced new mask mandates and demanded state governments and corporate America institute forced vaccination programs.
That made the spectacle of Obama throwing a party with celebrities and rock stars joining 500 guests with 200 servants waiting on them an optical embarrassment for the Biden administration.
It quickly became apparent that the Biden administration and the Democrats couldn’t whip the country up into a state of hysteria and panic over COVID if the Democrat Party elite ignored every Centers for Disease Control guideline to throw a rock concert in the backyard of his $12-million-dollar Martha’s Vineyard estate.
That led to Obama scaling back his party to just close family and friends.
“Due to the new spread of the Delta variant over the past week, the President and Mrs. Obama have decided to significantly scale back the event to include only family and close friends,” Obama spokeswoman Hannah Hankins announced. “He’s appreciative of others sending their birthday wishes from afar and looks forward to seeing people soon.”
Former Obama chief strategist David Axelrod told The New York Times that the political reality of the moment dictated that Obama scrap the plan for a massive party.
“They’ve been concerned about the virus from the beginning, asking invited guests if they had been vaccinated, requesting that they get a test proximate to the event,” Axelrod told The Times. “But when this was planned, the situation was quite different. So they responded to the changing circumstances.”
Obama needed to cancel the party to maintain the illusion that Democrats are concerned about COVID so they can keep mandates and restrictions in place in a bid to keep power next year.
