Barack Obama never saw this humiliation coming.
The former President picked a fight he couldn’t win.
And Barack Obama was shut down by this woman that every Democrat fears.
In an interview with Snapchat, Barack Obama took aim at supporters of defunding the police claiming their slogan was bad political marketing that alienated the vast majority of Americans.
“If you believe, as I do, that we should be able to reform the criminal justice system so that it’s not biased, and treats everybody fairly, I guess you can use a snappy slogan like ‘Defund the Police,’ but you know you’ve lost a big audience the minute you say it. Which makes it a lot less likely that you’re actually going to get the changes you want done,” Obama stated.
Obama wasn’t saying he opposed defunding the police.
Quite the opposite.
A careful reading of his message reveals that it’s only the slogan that bothers Barack Obama because he knows it is a political loser.
Obama wants to defund the police but is calling on Democrats to reframe their pitch to voters in a more palatable fashion.
But even this mild criticism did not sit well with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Cortez blasted Obama and claimed that her “defund the police” push was actually a positive because it focused Americans on the fake news myth that police routinely target black men for harassment and killing.
“What if activists aren’t PR firms for politicians & their demands are bc police budgets are exploding, community resources are shrinking to bankroll it, & ppl brought this up for ages but it wasn’t until they said ‘defund’ that comfortable people started paying attn to brutality,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on social media.
Ocasio-Cortez argued that her extremist demands to “defund the police” pushed the boundaries of the policy discussion in the Democrats’ favor.
“The thing that critics of activists don’t get is that they tried playing the ‘polite language’ policy game and all it did was make them easier to ignore. It wasn’t until they made folks uncomfortable that there was traction to do ANYTHING even if it wasn’t their full demands,” Ocasio-Cortez added.
Ocasio-Cortez defended “defund the police” being a political loser in the short term by claiming it will pay dividends down the road.
“The whole point of protesting is to make ppl uncomfortable. Activists take that discomfort w/ the status quo & advocate for concrete policy changes. Popular support often starts small & grows. To folks who complain protest demands make others uncomfortable… that’s the point.”
There is little doubt that the future of the Democrat Party is trending in Ocasio-Cortez’s direction.
But it is also clear the Democrats lost double digit House seats in the 2020 election because of radical policy proposals like “defund the police.”
However, since Ocasio-Cortez is immensely popular with the Democrat Party base, Obama trying to reframe the conversation is like spitting in the ocean.
