It was not supposed to be this way.
Former President Barack Obama’s best laid plans just blew up in his face.
And now Obama’s world is crashing down because of this piece of awful news.
Barack Obama – as well as every other Democrat in and out of Washington – believes the 2020 election is theirs for the taking.
Democrats look at the polls and see Donald Trump’s approval ratings in the low 40s and think he’s a dead President walking.
Across the country, elected Democrats – as well as former office holders and Presidential candidates – all believe they can become the next Commander-in-Chief.
With so many Democrats viewing the nomination as a prize worth having, it could lead to a field of 20 or more candidates.
And every candidate wants Barack Obama’s endorsement because of the sway he holds with a number of constituencies that make up the Democrat Party base.
That’s why a number of candidates – both declared and prospective – have traveled to Washington to meet behind closed doors with the former President.
Obama held court in private meetings with Cory Booker, Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar, Elizabeth Warren, Eric Holder, and Michael Bloomberg.
Obama associates told the New York Times that, “Mr. Obama continues to express frustration that he did not anticipate Mr. Trump’s victory, these people said, even after years of clashing with the forces of right-wing populism as president.”
Sources close to Obama also told the Times that, “He has urged candidates to push back on Mr. Trump’s bleak and divisive rhetoric about economic change, and to deliver a competing message that can resonate even in Republican-leaning areas, courting rural voters and other communities that tend to distrust Democrats.”
And while Obama tried to lay out a road map to defeat President Trump, the former President was blindsided by a stunning reality.
Donald Trump’s re-election chances are much stronger than anyone thought.
That’s because President Trump’s approval numbers with Hispanic voters is on the rise.
In 2016, Trump shocked political observers by winning nearly 30 percent of the Hispanic vote – which was greater than that of Mitt Romney four years prior.
Some pre-election polls had shown Trump winning as little as 18 percent of the Hispanic vote, and so-called “experts” predicted Trump would be swept away by a demographic landslide.
That was obviously fake news.
And the Democrats’ hopes that Trump’s hardline stance on immigration would finally drive down all his support with Hispanics also failed to materialize.
A recent Politico/Morning Consult poll found that Trump held a 42 percent approval rating with Hispanics.
Others showed the President holding a favorable rating with Hispanics in the mid-to-high 30s.
Those numbers may only increase.
Despite the fake news media myths, Hispanics are not a monolithic voting bloc that only votes on the issue of amnesty for illegal aliens.
The President took a hard line on removing corrupt socialist President Maduro in Venezuela.
Republican Ron DeSantis attacked the Democrats for their support of Venezuelan-style socialism in his victorious 2018 gubernatorial campaign, mobilizing support from Central American and Cuban voters who had fled those corrupt governments in their home country.
President Trump could replicate that playbook and make significant inroads in key voting constituencies and lock up Florida.
In addition, the booming economy also propels Trump’s rising Hispanic approval numbers.
Hispanic unemployment is at a record low and wages are rising.
Finally, Boston-based political analyst David Bernstein noted on this under-the-radar fact: two-thirds of Hispanics in the United States are native born.
These voters are more conservative than naturalized immigrants and vote more like non-Hispanic white Americans.
So if anything, Obama and the Democrats are underestimating the level of support Trump has heading into 2020 and setting themselves up for another soul crushing defeat.
