The top two candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination are Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden.
But things are about to get ugly between them.
Sanders is about to go to war with Biden for one reason.
It’s very likely that either Joe Biden or Bernie Sanders will be the Democratic nominee for President in 2020.
And the winner of that nomination contest will ultimately face off against Donald Trump in the November general election to determine control of the White House.
But while Sanders and Biden lead the increasingly crowded Democratic primary field, only one of them can be the nominee.
And Sanders is determined to make sure it isn’t going to be Biden.
He isn’t alone though.
The entire Democratic field is now looking at Biden as the main rival to their path to the nomination.
And it isn’t hard to see why.
The Hill reports, “Progressives are taking shots at Joe Biden, seeking to blunt the former vice president’s rise in polls by arguing he is too conservative to be the party’s presidential nominee.”
“The criticism has come from rivals to Biden on the campaign trail as well as liberal groups seeking to put a dent into his poll numbers.”
In short, Democrats are desperate to attack Biden now before his lead in the primary grows stronger.
“They are casting Biden as an establishment figure out of touch with the grass roots of his party, highlighting his work on a Clinton-era crime bill and the Iraq War, among other issues,” adds The Hill.
“The criticism suggests some angst on the part of progressives, who fear Biden might beat out candidates such as Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), who have more liberal voting records than the former vice president.”
Neither Sanders nor Warren stand much of a chance of winning the nomination so long as Biden maintains the lead he currently has on both of them.
And if either hopes to win the nomination, they have to attack Joe Biden now rather than wait for him to continue to gain steam.
But they’re rapidly running out of time.
A new Hill-HarrisX poll from earlier this week shows that Biden may have the nomination locked up, with a massive lead over the rest of the field.
Despite there being over 20 candidates running in the Democratic primary, Biden is polling at 46% of the vote, with Bernie Sanders in a massive 32 point hole at just 14%.
Sanders is currently in second place according to this poll, with the rest of the field so far behind Biden they seem to have little chance of defeating him.
If Sanders still wants to be president, he’s going to have to go to war with Biden and make him the biggest target in the Democratic primary field.
While it’s still not clear whether or not Sanders can pull it off, this is still the only option he has left if he hopes to defeat Biden and become the nominee.
