Nancy Pelosi will soon give up the gavel and no longer be speaker of the House.
But there are questions about her future in Congress.
And now Nancy Pelosi just made one bombshell retirement announcement.
On January 3 Nancy Pelosi will turn over the gavel to the new Republican majority.
Pelosi also did not stand for election as leader of the Democrats in the House of Representatives.
That left Pelosi serving as a backbench member of Congress for the first time in decades.
Pelosi is also in the odd position of hanging around Congress after winning re-election in November while a new Democrat leadership team tries to get its sea legs.
At one of her final press conferences Pelosi fielded the usual softball questions from her cheering section in the Washington press corps.
But one actually asked Pelosi a real question wondering if Pelosi would serve her full two-year term.
“Will you commit to serving your full two-year term for the people of San Francisco?” the reporter asked Pelosi.
That question – which has a simple yes or no answer – caused Pelosi to flip out and shout at the reporter for having the temerity to ask something real.
“What is this?” Pelosi snarled. “Don’t bother me with a question like that! Really! Really. Okay?”
“Not what I’m going to do. Yeah, I don’t. Those kind of questions are such a waste of my time,” Pelosi sneered.
“Will you commit to serving your full two-year term for the people of San Francisco?”

But Pelosi’s answer was far more revealing than she intended.
Pelosi won re-election a little over one month ago.
The fact that Pelosi would not say she will serve a full two-year term in Congress is a dead giveaway that Pelosi intends to retire early.
If Pelosi wanted to stay for two years she would just say so.
There is a practical reason for Pelosi to hit the road before her term expires.
Pelosi sticking around for two more years creates an uncomfortable dynamic for new House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
Every deal Jeffries cuts or strategy he pursues will be second-guessed as Democrats and their friends in the media will wonder what Pelosi would have done and ask her that question.
Pelosi’s retirement is one of the longest running rumors in Washington.
Nancy Pelosi became a failed speaker for the second time being one of the few to lose the majority on multiple occasions.
And now the question is a matter of when and not if Pelosi will announce her retirement.
