Chuck Schumer found himself in a position that was unfamiliar territory.
The top Democrat in the Senate is used to getting his way.
And that’s why everyone was speechless when Chuck Schumer confessed to something he never admitted before in his life.
Like every Democrat, Schumer thought Robert Mueller’s leaked letter moaning about Attorney General Barr’s March 24th top-line conclusions of the Special Counsel’s report was a bombshell.
“There is now public confusion about critical aspects of the results of our investigation. This threatens to undermine a central purpose for which the Department appointed the Special Counsel: to assure full public confidence in the outcome of the investigations,” Mueller had complained in his letter to Barr.
But this “bombshell” fizzled when Barr revealed that Mueller had expected him to spoon feed the media the carefully crafted Democrat Party talking points he included in the report.
With the Democrats plans to exploit Mueller’s letter crumbling around them, New York Senator Chuck Schumer marched down to the Senate floor and admitted they were desperate circumstances.
Schumer unleashed a series of verbal pyrotechnics that told everyone watching that the Democrats were on the losing end of this fight and were frantically trying to reshape the narrative.
“His confirmation occurred only a few months ago and yet in a short time Mr. Barr’s conduct has raised damning questions about his impartiality and about his fitness,” Schumer ranted.
Schumer entered Mueller’s letter into the Congressional Record and continued assailing Attorney General Barr’s reputation.
“What a stunning indictment of the attorney general, whose principal job in all of this was to make sure that he wasn’t mischaracterizing or spinning results. This letter shows what an awful, awful attorney general Barr has been so far,” Schumer declared.
Schumer delivered this speech while Barr was testifying and Schumer’s fellow Senate Democrats picked up on his cue.
Hawaii Senator Mazie Hirono slandered Barr during her opportunity to question him.
Instead of trying to learn new information to help better inform the public about the process Attorney General Barr used to lightly redact and release the Mueller report, Hirono ranted that he was a corrupt sellout working for a racist grafter.
“Mr. Barr, now the American people know that you are no different from Rudy Giuliani or Kellyanne Conway or any of other people who sacrifice their once-decent reputation for the grifter and liar who sits in the Oval Office,” Hirono lectured.
Schumer and Hirono’s rants were not the conduct of politicians who sensed they held the upper hand in a high stakes political fight.
In fact, it demonstrated the exact opposite.
They could not argue the facts or the law, so they set out to destroy William Barr’s character.
But in the eyes of millions of Americans, they failed that miserably too.
