Chuck Schumer was caught on camera saying something he would instantly regret.
In an event with New York community leaders, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer attacked the 74,000,000 Americans that voted for Donald Trump, saying he did not understand how anyone could vote for a “vile,” “racist,” and “despicable” man like Trump.
“How could 74 million people vote for such a despicable human being as Donald Trump?” Schumer stated.
“I don’t care if you’re a liberal or a conservative, Democrat or Republican, he is a vile man.”
“He is dishonest, divisive. That’s what he loves to do. Just divide and have people fighting with each other. He’s a racist,” Schumer added.
“And he always appeals to the dark side of human nature.”
Schumer’s comments immediately brought comparisons to Hillary Clinton’s infamous 2016 gaffe about Donald Trump supporters.
“You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic – you name it. And, unfortunately, there are people like that. And he has lifted them up. He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people, now have 11 million. He tweets and retweets offensive, hateful, mean-spirited rhetoric,” Clinton said during the 2016 campaign.
Many pundits pointed to that smear as evidence the Democrat elites had long lost touch with the country, and thus paved the way for Trump’s rise.
After Clinton lost the election, some Democrats wondered how they could have missed portions of their base moving into Trump’s column – 200 counties that voted for Barack Obama had flipped to Trump.
No one really buys the argument that these Americans who twice voted for Barack Obama were motivated by “racism” to pick Trump as their champion.
But Trump supporters rebelled against the political establishment for shipping their jobs overseas, sending their children to fight in endless wars, and leaving the border wide open for illegal aliens to pour into the country.
Democrats don’t want to address these policy shortfalls because it would mean admitting their entire agenda is a failure – and that will never happen.
Instead, Democrats are doubling down on their attacks on Donald Trump and his voters.
And liberals like Chuck Schumer believe this is their path to retaining power.
Conservatives always suspected that the liberal elites looked down their noses at them.
Schumer proved that with his words.
