Starting by kicking Donald Trump off social media, the left set about to censor all conservative political speech.
The left thought they had a plan to take down the next biggest target on their list.
But Democrats never expected this nasty surprise to destroy the plan to cancel Fox News.
Democrats on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce dragged top executives from cable operators and streaming services in to testify about the spread of so-called “misinformation” on cable news.
Before the hearing started, California Democrats Anna Eshoo and Jerry McNerney gave the game away that this hearing was nothing more than a Stalinist show trial with a letter to the executives demanding to know why they did not censor Fox News, Newsmax and One America News as well as demanding to know if they would drop those cable channels.
No one had ever seen elected officials expressly threaten service providers to censor their political opponents before.
And given the trends on social media—where tech companies immediately comply with the left’s demands to censor conservative views—many were worried conservative cable news channels would be the latest victims of left-wing cancel culture.
But there were still some defenders of free speech in government.
Federal Communication Commission members Brendan Carr and Nathan Simington slammed the Democrats for their anti-American censorship crusade.
In a statement posted to the FCC’s official website, Carr blasted Eshoo and McNerney’s letter as having a “chilling” effect on America’s newsroom to intimidate them into promoting the Democrats’ preferred political narrative or face the full weight of the United States government harassing them.
“By writing letters to the cable providers and other regulated entities that carry these news media outlets, the Democrats are sending a message that is as clear as it is troubling—these regulated entities will pay a price if the targeted newsrooms do not conform to Democrats’ preferred political narratives. This is a chilling transgression of the free speech rights that every media outlet in this country enjoys,” Carr wrote.
Carr wrote that in America the answer to speech someone doesn’t like is more speech and to engage in debate.
Instead, Carr argued, Democrats mounted a campaign straight out of Communist China to silence their opponents.
“Debate on matters of public interest should be robust, uninhibited, and wide open. More speech is better than less. Yet the concerted effort by Democrats to drive political dissent from the public square represents a marked departure from these First Amendment norms. A newsroom’s decision about what stories to cover and how to frame them should be beyond the reach of any government official, not targeted by them,” Carr added.
Simington echoed those sentiments declaring that the left now deemed any opinion of viewpoint they disagreed with “misinformation” and deployed that as the grounds for censorship.
“It is worrying that members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee have found it appropriate or necessary to apply the overbroad and vague label of ‘misinformation’ to any media reportage that calls into question their preferred political narratives, and have sought to intimidate into silence those who would distribute on their platforms disfavored points of view,” Simington stated.
While this attempt at censorship was met with extreme hostility, it should not be taken lightly.
In 2019 many treated Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris’ calls for Twitter to ban Donald trump as a joke.
Within one year it became mainstream thought not just in the Democrat Party, but also with the oligarchs that run Silicon Valley.
