Democrats spent four years trying to get Donald Trump.
The moment of truth finally arrived.
And Donald Trump stunned supporters with this reaction to criminal charges.
Manhattan’s Democrat District Attorney Cy Vance indicted Trump Chief Financial Officer Allan Weisselberg and the Trump Organization on charges Weisselberg and the Trump Organization did not pay taxes on fringe benefits.
Even Democrats like former Obama chief strategist David Axelrod observed that rarely prosecuted charges of this nature made the indictment look like a politically motivated fishing expedition.
“I’m sure the NY DA and AG understand that, from an optics standpoint, the first charges they bring against the Trump Organization can’t be petty, rarely-prosecuted crimes. Don’t they?” Axelrod posted on social media.
The Manhattan district attorney and New York attorney general spent years investigating Donald Trump, and this is all they came up with.
Trump took it as a sign of the investigation’s weakness and told advisors on a conference call how it could benefit his chances in 2024 with one advisor telling POLITICO that it all but guaranteed Donald Trump would run for president again in three years.
POLITICO Playbook reports:
The former president was on a conference call with his advisers Monday discussing his favorite topic — revenge — when he was interrupted with an update on the Manhattan D.A.’s investigation. He would not be personally indicted, Trump was told — only Weisselberg and the Trump Organization would be. Trump was thrilled by what he saw as light charges, and according to one of the advisers on the call, his mind raced to 2024.
“Just wait until 2024, you’ll see,” Trump said. The former president implied that the legal case would be seen as a political witch hunt that would backfire on Democrats. “This is going to hurt Sleepy Joe.”
The adviser had the impression that Trump, who was already coming off a high from the large crowd at his rally in Ohio last weekend, was emboldened by the news. “Now he’s definitely going to run for president” again, the person said.
From the very start, Democrats and Deep State prosecutors launched investigations designed to overturn the results of the 2016 election.
The Mueller probe dragged on for nearly two years before coming up empty.
Prosecutors in New York quickly took up the baton in an effort to charge Trump with crimes to prevent him from running for president in 2024.
That gambit appears to have failed.
While these indictments do not preclude the Manhattan district attorney from charging Trump, even anti-Trump prosecutors realize this criminal indictment against Trump is unlikely to materialize.
MSNBC legal analyst and Democrat impeachment lawyer Daniel Goldman said the indictment indicated no more charges – including against Donald Trump – were forthcoming.
“I don’t think we have any good reason to suspect that he is going to cooperate down the road. So I don’t see why there would be additional charges against the Trump Organization unless new evidence comes in. My guess is that they’ve evaluated this evidence. … So it’s a little confusing to me if they have more why they would charge this. And for that reason, common sense leads me to believe that they’re not going to have any more,” Goldman said on MSNBC.
And that could open up the door for Donald Trump’s third White House bid.
