With the first Democratic debate of the 2020 election now in the history books, the aftermath continues to unfold.
And the results are stunning.
A shock Drudge poll is now showing someone completely unexpected won the Democratic debate, and it’s bad news for Joe Biden.
When 20 Democrats converged on Miami for the first debate of the 2020 election cycle, the political pundits had their eyes on the heavy hitters.
Candidates like Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, and Bernie Sanders were expected to dominate the coverage of the two-night debate setup.
And while all five of these candidates were among those who got the most speaking time, a new Drudge poll shows that none of them ended up winning over the public after it was all said and done.
Instead, that honor went to two candidates who were completely unknown before last week, and the results are a massive shock to the Democratic establishment.
“California businessman Andrew Yang emerged from a large crowd of opponents as the winner of the second round of Democratic debates, earning 29% by the end of the night, according to a Drudge Report poll,” reports the Daily Caller.
Andrew Yang was one of the 20 candidates that attended the two-day debate in Miami, but who was largely unknown before last Thursday.
The Democrat, promising every American 12,000 dollars for free every year, has gained a considerable amount of attention for his promise of literal free money to American citizens. While he got less airtime at the debate compared to other candidates, the Drudge poll shows Yang is surging in the primary cycle.
“Yang has advocated for issues such as universal basic income, which would cost the United States an estimated $3 trillion or more per year, and Medicare for All. Despite his victory, Yang is polling at 1.3% in the latest RealClearPolitics poll,” adds the Daily Caller.
Yang’s campaign is more or less centered around promising Americans a new entitlement program while also staking out unorthodox positions that other Democratic candidates don’t tend to focus on.
This brand of politics has helped Yang stand out from the rest of the field, when he’s gotten little campaign coverage elsewhere.
And the Drudge poll could be bad news for the leaders of the Democratic primary, including major candidates like Joe Biden.
The more candidates like Yang gain traction, the more establishment Democrats will have to contend with them.
And signs are already forming that such a thing is already playing out.
Another unorthodox Democrat is also topping the Drudge poll.
“Author Marianne Williamson took second place in the voting with 13.6%. She is polling at 1% in the latest FiveThiryEight poll. None of the top three winners have served in Congress, as South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg came in third place with 13%, and neither Yang nor Williamson has ever held political office at all,” adds the Daily Caller.
