Democrats cannot get out from under the Clinton scandals.
That is bad news for the party in one key election.
And Hillary Clinton’s past is causing problems for this big-name Democrat.
Former Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe – who also served as Democratic National Committee Chair for President Bill Clinton and who also served as the Clinton family’s biggest fundraiser – is running again for his old job.
Virginiaterm limits allow governors to one four-year term and McAuliffe – who served from 2014 to 2018 – is the Democrat nominee in 2021 facing off against Republican Glenn Youngkin.
The Virginia Bar Association scheduled a debate between the two candidates.
PBS News anchor Judy Woodruff moderated similar debates in 2013 and 2017.
But in 2015, POLITICO reported that Woodruff donated $250 to the Clinton Foundation in 2010 as part of the foundation’s relief efforts following an earthquake in Haiti.
Now the two campaigns are fighting over Woodruff moderating the debate due to accusations of bias and McAuliffe’s connection to Bill and Hillary Clinton.
“Since political organizations are usually creatures of habit, given the fact that Woodruff has moderated debates for the VBA in the last two gubernatorial elections in Virginia there is a good chance—sources throughout Virginia on both sides say this is a point of contention right now—that the organization may turn to Woodruff again this year, even though no such news has been announced yet,” Breitbart reported.
The Clinton Foundation’s scandalous efforts in Haiti – as well as media figures’ donations to the foundation – became an issue in the 2016 campaign.
Former Haitian Senate President Bernard Sansaricq’s blistering critique of the Clinton Foundation became a campaign issue in the race between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.
“Sadly, when an earthquake rocked the nation of Haiti in 2010, corruption moved in faster than the help so desperately needed. Today, the people of Haiti are still suffering despite the billions of dollars that have flowed into the Clinton Foundation,” Sansaricq’s statement read. “The Clintons exploited this terrible disaster to steal billions of dollars from the sick and starving people of Haiti. The world trusted the Clintons to help the Haitian people during their most desperate time of need and they were deceived. The Clintons and their friends are richer today while millions still live in tents. The world deserves to know where the money went and why help was never sent.”
In 2015, ABC anchor – and former Clinton administration communications director – George Stephanopoulos got booted from moderating a GOP primary debate over donations to the Clinton Foundation.
For many Republicans this came four years too late as in 2011 Stephanopoulos created the Obama campaign’s “war on women” talking point by asking Republicans in a primary debate about banning birth control even though no Republican running for president proposed such an idea.
Virginia Republicans are worried that Clinton Foundation donor Judy Woodruff could be planning a similar set-up.
