Joe Biden could not believe it.
Biden never saw this coming.
And Joe Biden asked one question. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s answer left him speechless.
Republicans hammered Joe Biden on the cost of his two-trillion-dollar bailout bill.
Conservatives ripped the bill as a socialist wish list giveaway project.
At an event in Michigan, Biden asked what Republicans would like to take out of the bill.
“Let me ask them: What would they have me cut? What would they have me leave out? Should we not invest $20 billion to vaccinate the nation? Should we not invest $290 million to extend unemployment insurance for the 11 million Americans who are unemployed so they can get by?” Biden rambled.
In fact just nine percent of the bill has anything to do with COVID relief or vaccine distribution so around 1.7 trillion dollars in spending could be cut.
Democrats had other ideas.
At the urging of Democrat Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Democrats cut the number of Americans that would receive $1,400 stimulus checks by lowering the phase-out to $80,000 for single filers and $160,000 for couples.
This belt-tightening means Joe Biden lied when he said if Democrats won the Senate, Americans would immediately get $2,000 checks.
In fact, as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez pointed out, this meant more Americans received stimulus checks under Donald Trump than Joe Biden.
“Conservative Dems have fought so the Biden admin sends fewer & less generous relief checks than the Trump admin did. It’s a move that makes little-to-no political or economic sense, and targets an element of relief that is most tangibly felt by everyday people. An own-goal,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote.
Ocasio-Cortez fired a warning shot across the bow of Chuck Schumer and Biden that Ocasio-Cortez and fellow socialists could blow up the Democrats’ 2022 midterm plans with a series of extreme demands including one to blow up the filibuster.
“We have a responsibility to show people in this country what a Democratic majority can do for working people. That means more generous relief checks, $15 min wage, ending the filibuster to protect our democracy. It’s a once-in-generation shot, and we need to legislate like it,” Ocasio-Cortez stated.
Biden even lost supportive pundits in the media as Chris Hayes could not understand why—of all the things to cut—Democrats stabbed their own voters in the back by limiting the most popular provision of the bill.
“Why on Earth would you take steps to make it less effective and less popular?!” Hayes fumed. “And yet today that is exactly what Senate Democrats were insisting on.”
Democrats now look like they could pay the political price in the next midterm by breaking their promises on stimulus checks for Americans.
