On Thursday night President Joe Biden walked out to a blood-red backdrop, flanked by US Marines and grimly targeted supporters of former President Trump, who he claims have taken over the Republican Party.
Biden claimed that MAGA Republicans represent a threat to American democracy.
“MAGA Republicans do not respect the Constitution,” he said. “They do not believe in the rule of law, they do not recognize the will of the people.
“MAGA forces are determined to take this country backwards,” he added. “Backwards to an America where there is no right to choose. No right to privacy. No right to contraception. No right to marry who you love. They promote authoritarian leaders and they fan the flames of political violence.”
He then claimed that MAGA Republicans aren’t a large percentage of the population, ignoring the fact that over 70 million Americans voted for Donald Trump.
“We are not powerless in the face of these threats,” the president said. “We are not bystanders in this ongoing attack on democracy. There are far more Americans, far more Americans, from every background and belief, who reject the extreme MAGA ideology than those that accept it.
“And folks, it’s within our power, within OUR HANDS, yours and mine, to stop the assault on democracy,” he continued. “I believe America is at an inflection point. One of those moments that determines the shape of everything that is to come after. And now, America must choose, to move forward or move backwards. To build a future or obsess about the past. To be a nation of hope and unity and optimism, or a nation of fear, division, and darkness.”
Former Trump White House press secretary and current Fox News host Kayleigh McEnany stated that the background was demonic and Biden’s words divisive.
“Standing in front of a hellish red background Biden called half the country, the MAGA Republicans ‘threats’ & ‘clear and present dangers,’” McEnany tweeted. “Then he says, ‘empathy is the fuel of democracy-the willingness to see each other not as enemies but as fellow Americans…’!!!”
Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel pointed out how Biden’s highly charged rhetoric has put the very lives of his political opponents in danger.
“Joe Biden’s wretched attacks on millions of Americans have fueled attacks on pregnancy centers, Republican offices, and an assassination attempt on a Supreme Court Justice,” McDaniel said. “His agenda has pitted neighbors against each other, rewarded the wealthy while punishing working families, and trampled on the rights and freedoms of Americans. Joe Biden is the divider-in-chief and epitomizes the current state of the Democrat Party: one of divisiveness, disgust, and hostility towards half the country.”
