Joe Biden got some bad news.
A rebellion within his own party just put his entire presidency in jeopardy.
Joe Biden learned a painful lesson when this Democrat turned on him.
Despite campaigning on “unity,” Joe Biden is proposing the most far-left agenda in American history.
Biden’s ability to pass his agenda hinges on all 50 Democrats staying united.
If Democrats want to pass amnesty for illegal aliens, statehood for Washington, D.C., banning and confiscating guns, and imposing nationwide mail-in-voting and ballot harvesting, Chuck Schumer needs a united caucus to eliminate the filibuster.
Joe Biden learned Democrats would not have the votes to junk the filibuster when West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin published a Washington Post op-ed declaring that under no circumstances would he vote to eliminate or weaken the filibuster, the minority party’s only tool to block or slow down legislation.
“The filibuster is a critical tool to protecting that input and our democratic form of government. That is why I have said it before and will say it again to remove any shred of doubt: There is no circumstance in which I will vote to eliminate or weaken the filibuster. The time has come to end these political games, and to usher a new era of bipartisanship where we find common ground on the major policy debates facing our nation,” Manchin declared.
Manchin warned Democrats that what goes around comes around and if they got rid of the filibuster now, they would pay a steep price the next time the GOP held the majority and the White House.
“Unfortunately, our leaders in the Senate fail to realize what goes around comes around. We should all be alarmed at how the budget reconciliation process is being used by both parties to stifle debate around the major issues facing our country today. Legislating was never supposed to be easy. It is hard work to address the needs of both rural and urban communities in a single piece of legislation, but it is the work we were elected to do,” Manchin continued.
Democrats learned this lesson the hard way when then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid eliminated the filibuster for lower court judicial nominations.
That came back to bite Democrats when Donald Trump won the 2016 election and Republicans used these new Senate rules to remake the federal judiciary with 200 new conservative justices and three new members of the Supreme Court.
But even more alarming to the Democrats was Manchin’s insistence that Democrats not use reconciliation to pass a multi-trillion-dollar spending binge that Democrats claim is infrastructure, but is really a Trojan horse for the Green New Deal and other socialist welfare state expansion.
“I simply do not believe budget reconciliation should replace regular order in the Senate. How is that good for the future of this nation? Senate Democrats must avoid the temptation to abandon our Republican colleagues on important national issues,” Manchin added.
If Biden’s trillions in spending fails or stalls out, it could sap the political momentum for his presidency and damage the Democrats’ prospects in the 2022 and 2024 elections.
