The left thought they had caught the big one.
The New York Times broke a story about Donald Trump they were sure would finish him for good.
But within 24 hours, their attempt to take down Trump blew up in their faces.
The New York Times reported that in June Trump attempted to fire special counsel Robert Mueller over conflict of interest.
Trump supposedly cited him interviewing Mueller for the vacant FBI Director job, Mueller resigning from one of Trump’s golf courses over a dispute about fees, and Mueller working for the law firm that represented Jared Kushner as reasons Mueller was too compromised to conduct the investigation.
The paper claimed Trump only backed down when White House counsel Don McGahn threatened to quit.
Journalists and pundits pounced on the story as evidence Trump obstructed justice.
But that charge quickly blew up in their faces.
First, Trump denied the story.
He declared it typical New York Times fake news.
CNN reports:
“Fake news, folks. Fake news,” Trump said when questioned about the revelation as he entered the World Economic Forum in Davos.
“Typical New York Times,” he added.
Secondly, Trump never fired Mueller.
You have to take an action to obstruct justice.
Trump did nothing.
Even Democrats went on CNN and shot down the theory.
Alisyn Camerota: "Do you consider (Trump's reported move to fire Mueller) obstruction of justice?"
Rep. Himes: "He didn't actually fire Mueller, so no act was committed. Now that takes us back to Jim Comey … that's, I think, a much more serious episode" https://t.co/0PtY9CWi8x

Many Trump supporters believe the President should fire Mueller.
His investigation was supposed to be about Russian collusion during the election.
He has found no evidence to substantiate that charge.
And now he is straying far beyond his mandate by trying to invent an obstruction case against the President.
But all this latest story proves is that the President’s enemies in the media are trying to criminalize hypotheticals.
We will keep you up to date on any new developments in this story.
