Some placed the blame for this decline on the fact that the Academy nominated a bunch of movies no one ever heard of after Hollywood scrapped the 2020 release dates due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Megyn Kelly had a different idea and instead ripped Hollywood for turning the Oscars into a showcase for ‘woke’ actors to lecture Americans about how evil and racist their country is.
“How’s all that incessant, insufferable woke, depressing lecturing via film, interviews, social media & at the actual, awful awards show going, Hollywood? Oscars Ratings Plummet by 58 Percent in overall, down 64% in younger audience,” Kelly wrote on social media.
Television insiders agreed with Kelly.
A former Oscar producer told The New York Times that viewers raced for the remote to change the channel as soon as the Academy Awards telecast got political.
“Increasingly, the ceremonies are less about entertainment honors and more about progressive politics, which inevitably annoys those in the audience who disagree. One recent producer of the Oscars, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss confidential metrics, said minute-by-minute post-show ratings analysis indicated that ‘vast swaths’ of people turned off their televisions when celebrities started to opine on politics,” The New York Times reported.
Woke politics and social justice identity politics are toxic politically in America.
Hollywood going all-in on Black Lives Matter repelled the viewing audience.
Democrats made the same calculation as Hollywood that championing Black Lives Matter and attacking the police is the path of broad appeal.
But like the Academy, Democrats could be turning off vast swaths of the electorate with their woke ideology.
Republicans only need to flip five seats in the House of Representatives and one in the Senate to win back the majority in both Houses of Congress.
The left appears to be falling into a trap of believing the catechisms leftists tell each other in their echo chambers represent the majority thinking in the United States.
If Republicans experience a big night next November, the low ratings for the Oscars could serve as the canary in the coal mine.
