Michelle Obama just did the unthinkable.
The former First Lady made a surprise appearance that had everyone talking.
And Obama made a big threat against Donald Trump no one thought was possible.
Michelle Obama is worshipped by the media, the Hollywood left, and the Democrat Party base.
Liberals view her as the rightful successor to Barack Obama.
And every public move she makes invites speculation over whether the former First Lady is gearing up for a 2020 Presidential campaign.
That is exactly how events played out when Obama made a surprise appearance at the Grammy Awards.
The celebrity audience gave her a thunderous standing ovation, and reporters swooned at the possibility of an Obama restoration in the White House.
Some pundits believed that Obama’s remarks – about how music helped define her story – were carefully tailored to resemble a campaign stump speech.
“From the Motown records I wore out on the South Side, to the ‘who run the world’ songs that fueled me through this last decade, music has always helped me tell my story. And I know that’s true for everybody here,” Obama began.
“Whether we like country, or rap or rock, music helps us share ourselves — our dignity and sorrows, our hopes and joys,” she explained to the audience. “It allows us to hear one another, to invite each other in.”
“Music shows us that all of it matters, every story within every voice, every note within every song — is that right ladies?” Obama gestured to the artists whom she shared the stage with—Jennifer Lopez, Jada Pinkett Smith, Lady Gaga, and host Alicia Keys.
Obama celebrated her Grammy appearance tweeting,
“A big part of friendship is showing up for your girls—that’s why I was thrilled to be there for the one and only @aliciakeys at the #GRAMMYs. She is one of the most genuine and thoughtful people I know—there’s no one better to help us all celebrate the unifying power of music!”
Michelle Obama has repeatedly shot down speculation that she will run for President in 2020.
But few believe her.
Outside of her husband, she is the biggest star in the Democrat Party.
She does not need to rush into an announcement.
And in fact, some pundits believe that by waiting, Obama can watch the large Democrat field – which is filled with lunatics and no-names – tear each other to pieces and make it clear not a single one can win a general election match-up against Donald Trump.
At that point, party leaders would beg Obama to get into the race and hand her the nomination at the convention.
Michelle Obama is famous for hating campaigning, so not having to wage an 18-month slog to win the Democrat nomination could be how leading Democrats will entice her into the race.
Obama is the only Democrat that has the star power, charisma, and base support to wage a credible campaign against Trump.
Of course, Trump will still be favored to win the election because the economy is strong and Trump is winding down unpopular foreign wars.
And the “peace and prosperity” theme has historically been a winning message for incumbent Presidents.
Both Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton rode this framing into landslide victories.
Nevertheless, Michelle Obama is probably the biggest threat the Democrats can throw against Donald Trump in 2020.
