Mike Pence and Donald Trump no longer see eye to eye.
Trump considers Pence disloyal, and Pence is looking to run as the establishment candidate for president in 2024.
But now Mike Pence asked the Supreme Court for one thing that left Donald Trump speechless.
At the Young America’s Foundation conference, an attendee asked Mike Pence a question about the future of the pro-life movement.
Former Vice President Pence responded that he never felt more confident the day would come that would see the end of the horror of abortion on demand in America.
“I’ve been in the pro-life movement since I was about your age,” Pence told the crowd. “And I’ve never been more optimistic that we are close to the day that we will restore the sanctity of life to the center of American law.”
Pence added that everyone should pray for the day Roe v. Wade ended up on the “ash heap of history.”
“I think if we come with conviction about the essential critical nature of life at the center of our laws, and we come with the compassion that has characterized this movement, I think it is well possible that that new majority on the Supreme Court of the United States will give us a fresh start. So let’s be heard. Let’s speak out, and let’s pray for the day that we send Roe v. Wade to the ash heap of history,” Pence added.
That very well could happen in the next Supreme Court term.
The court agreed to hear the state of Mississippi’s appeal of a lower court ruling striking down the state’s ban on abortion after 15 weeks.
Mississippi’s court case is the most direct challenge to Roe v. Wade since 1992’s Planned Parenthood v. Casey which essentially replaced Roe in keeping abortion on demand legal in America.
When Donald Trump appointed Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, Trump and his supporters expected them to overturn Roe.
Pence added that he believed Americans were growing more pro-life by the year as the lies of the abortion industry and liberal corporate media collapsed under the truth about abortion thanks to the clear science that shows life begins at conception and that abortion stops a beating heart.
“I honestly believe that the progress that we’ve been making that shows that your generation, almost every day, is embracing the right to life, is that since that decision in 1973 – I have to believe in my heart that in the quiet counsels between mothers and daughters, between grandmothers and granddaughters, the truth about abortion is being told,” Pence added.
It’s an open question as to if that will happen, but Pence begging the court to overturn Roe is not the path establishment Republicans typically take when they run for president.
Instead, Pence looks like he will try to straddle the line as a Trump loyalist while also making sure the establishment and donor class see that Pence won’t challenge the system like Trump.
