Nancy Pelosi was furious when 24 Republicans defied the House physician’s absurd and unscientific new mandate that all members and their staff wear masks when inside the Capitol.
Republicans mocked the mandate as based on voodoo since the Senate has no mask mandate and the only distance between the House and the Senate is the Capitol rotunda.
The following day,Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger circulated a memo informing members of Congress that the Capitol Hill Police would now enforce Pelosi’s mask mandate under the threat of arresting anyone that refused to comply.
“If a visitor or staff member fails to wear a mask after a request is made to do so, the visitor or staff shall be denied entry to the House Office Buildings or House-side of the U.S. Capitol,” Manger wrote to members of Congress. “Any person who fails to either comply or leave the premises after being asked to do so would be subject to an arrest for Unlawful Entry.”
Republicans swiftly pushed back.
“This is INSANE. Might as well come into my office and arrest my entire staff. We are not wearing masks. I support the Capitol Hill Police, but the Chief of Police made a mistake here. The physician and the chief of police don’t have this authority,” Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie wrote on social media.
Critics also noted that when the House returned from August recess in mid-September, Congress will vote on Joe Biden’s $3.5 trillion socialist welfare and Green New Deal spending bill.
This letter’s timing allows the police to arrest Nancy Pelosi’s political opposition right when Republicans are trying to stop the biggest expansion of socialism in America since the 1960s and LBJ’s Great Society.
After the uproar, the Capitol Hill Police tried to walk back the threat to act as Pelosi’s enforcers and arrest the Democrats’ political opponents.
“Regarding the House rules about masks, there is no reason it should ever come to someone being arrested,” a Capitol Hill Police Department email read. “Anyone who does not follow the rules will be asked to wear a mask or leave the premises. The Department’s requirement for officers to wear masks is for their health and safety.”
But the damage was already done.
Relations between Democrats and Republicans deteriorated for months.
Republicans now believe Pelosi is a power mad dictator who is out to punish and arrest her political opponents.
For all the Democrats’ talk about how they must defend democracy, Pelosi is acting like the leader of a military junta in a third-world banana republic.
