Liz Cheney is not done with politics just yet.
The Never Trump RINO wants to make her impact felt on the 2024 presidential election.
And Ron DeSantis wrote two words that caused Liz Cheney to melt down.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis made waves by responding to Tucker Carlson’s questions to leading GOP presidential contenders about their stance on funding the war in Ukraine.
DeSantis planted his flag in the conservative camp and argued Joe Biden’s proxy war against Russia distracted from true national security threats such as confronting Communist China and securing the southern border.
“While the U.S. has many vital national interests – securing our borders, addressing the crisis of readiness within our military, achieving energy security and independence, and checking the economic, cultural, and military power of the Chinese Communist Party – becoming further entangled in a territorial dispute between Ukraine and Russia is not one of them,” DeSantis wrote.
Establishment Republicans and war hawks were horrified as they thought DeSantis was in their camp.
But the truth is DeSantis is a conservative and not a liberal interventionist.
Cheney responded to DeSantis in The New York Times dusting off all the old establishment GOP clichés and talking points about Ronald Reagan and needing to fight wars all over the world in the name of freedom.
“DeSantis is wrong and seems to have forgotten the lessons of Ronald Reagan,” Cheney told the Times.
Cheney also claimed — without citing any evidence — that funding the war in Ukraine was critical to stopping Communist China from invading Taiwan.
“Weakness is provocative and American officials who advocate this type of weakness are Putin’s greatest weapon. Abandoning Ukraine would make broader conflict, including with China and other American adversaries, more likely,” Cheney added.
Instead of deterring Communist China from starting a war with the U.S. over Taiwan Joe Biden’s proxy war with Russia may speed up the Chinese timetable.
Biden emptied the American arsenal to arm the Ukrainians with $46 billion in weapons and Communist China may view now as the time to strike with a depleted American military.
But what really set Liz Cheney and other D.C. Republicans off was the fact that DeSantis referred to the conflict as a “territorial dispute.”
“This is not ‘a territorial dispute,’” Cheney added. “The Ukrainian people are fighting for their freedom. Surrendering to Putin and refusing to defend freedom makes America less safe.”
Donald Trump also responded to Carlson’s Ukraine questionnaire.
Trump went even further than DeSantis and called for cutting off aid to the Ukrainians to force peace talks.
Combined, Trump and DeSantis take home more than 75 percent of the vote in GOP primary polls.
Three quarters of GOP voters now align themselves with Donald Trump’s “America First” foreign policy vision.
The center of gravity in the Republican Party is no longer Liz Cheney, the Bush family, and their interventionist foreign policy.
Trump and DeSantis are far closer to the average GOP voter than Liz Cheney.
And that speaks to the fact that Trump reshaping the GOP on policy grounds is complete.
