Nancy Pelosi just found out how much trouble Democrats are in.
The hole is even deeper than anyone thought.
And one key Democrat broke the bad news to Nancy Pelosi that made every liberal tremble.
Oregon Democrat Peter DeFazio served in Congress since winning his first election in 1986.
Now DeFazio is the 19th Democrat to call it quits ahead of the 2022 midterm election.
“With humility and gratitude I am announcing that I will not seek re-election next year. It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as Congressman for the Fourth District of Oregon,” DeFazio wrote in a statement announcing his retirement.
DeFazio oddly claimed that even though American democracy was supposedly under threat now was the time for DeFazio to head to the exits.
“It’s time for me to pass the baton to the next generation so I can focus on my health and well-being. This was a tough decision at a challenging time for our republic with the very pillars of our democracy under threat, but I am bolstered by the passion and principles of my colleagues in Congress and the ingenuity and determination of young Americans who are civically engaged and working for change,” DeFazio added.
But there was far more going on than meets the eye.
And DeFazio’s retirement spoke volumes about the toxic political environment Democrats believe they face next November.
DeFazio served as the chairman of the Transportation Committee.
Spokeswoman from the National Republican Congressional Committee Courtney Parella taunted Democrats noting that senior members of Congress did not just willingly give up power.
“Committee Chairs don’t retire unless they know their majority is gone. Nancy Pelosi’s days as Speaker are numbered,” Parella declared.
In 2020, DeFazio squeaked by Republican challenger Aleksander Reed Skarlatos by just 25,000 votes.
Skarlatos ̶ a former Oregon National Guardsman – became an international hero in 2015 when Skarlatos and his friends thwarted a radical Islamic terrorist attack by taking down a jihadist gunman aboard a train to Paris.
DeFazio looked at a rematch with Skarlatos in 2022 where the Republicans were sure to enjoy a much more favorable political terrain and threw in the towel.
A recent ABC/Washington Post poll found Republicans leading Democrats by 10 points on the questions of which party Americans wanted to see controlling Congress.
That represented the largest lead Republicans held in the history of the ABC/Washington Post poll.
The inflation, border and supply chain crises are all a direct result of Joe Biden’s failed policies.
Democrats like Pete DeFazio understand that in midterm elections the president’s party suffers.
And even senior members of Congress like DeFazio would rather retire than risk running in a tough election they might lose.
