Joe Biden and his allies thought they were shifting the political conversation to more favorable terms.
But then they absorbed another gut punch.
And one key Democrat just turned on Chuck Schumer with this public betrayal.
Joe Biden’s sinking poll numbers have Democrats worried.
Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi’s positions depend in large part on Joe Biden’s approval ratings.
But self-inflicted crises involving jobs, the border, inflation, crime and Afghanistan left Biden’s political standing a wobbly mess.
Democrats hoped a September shift to a debate on Joe Biden’s 3.5-trillion-dollar cradle-to-grave socialist welfare state and Green New Deal bill would reunite Democrats and left-leaning independents behind Joe Biden heading into next year.
Those plans imploded on the launch pad.
West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin leaked to Axios that he warned Biden, Schumer and Nancy Pelosi that he would support no more than $1.5 trillion in new Green New Deal and socialist spending.
Axios reported:
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) has privately warned the White House and congressional leaders that he has specific policy objections to President Biden’s $3.5 trillion social-spending dream — and he’ll support as little as $1 trillion of it, Axios’ Hans Nichols scoops.
At most, Manchin will support $1.5 trillion, sources familiar with the discussions say.
Manchin’s line in the sand could cause socialists like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to blow up the whole deal by killing a 1.2-trillion-dollar Green New Deal down-payment bill that was seen as the compromise to get Manchin and other moderates on board for the larger spending bill.
Manchin also sought to limit the size of the bill by scaling back the tax increases that could pass the Senate.
Axios also reported that “Manchin also will insist on paying for any new spending with new revenue, which will limit the ultimate size of any final package.”
Despite no agreement on this size and scope of the socialist spending bill, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer vowed to push ahead at full speed.
“We’re moving full speed ahead,” Schumer told the press. “We want to keep going forward. We think getting this done is so important for the American people.”
Joe Biden’s presidency can’t afford anymore failures.
This multi-trillion-dollar spending binge represents the last real chance to post a significant victory before the 2022 midterm election.
If this spending spree goes down in flames, pundits, elected officials and Americans would likely view Joe Biden as a failed president.
That is the narrative Democrats want to carry into next year.
But Democrats only have 50 votes in the Senate.
Without Joe Manchin they cannot pass anything.
So this entire ‘Democrats in disarray’ civil war will likely come down to a staring contest between Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Joe Manchin.
