There is no turning back on the Democrats’ push to impeach President Donald Trump.
But now Democrats are scrambling to perform damage control.
And that’s because Nancy Pelosi made this shocking confession about impeachment that no one saw coming.
Nancy Pelosi finally caved in to the pressure from her most radical members.
Speaker Pelosi spent months stiff-arming impeachment calls over her concern that any effort to remove the President would boomerang on the Democrats in 2020.
But when the spy’s so-called “whistleblower” complaint leaked about the President supposedly pressuring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate Joe Biden, the dam broke on the Democrat side.
Pelosi made major news when she capitulated to the left-wing pressure and announced Democrats would conduct an impeachment inquiry.
Democrats still – however – needed to contend with the political fallout.
The party must still protect incumbents – such as New Jersey Congressman Jeff Van Drew – who are running in districts carried by Donald Trump.
Van Drew appeared on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News program and warned that impeachment would nullify the results of the 2016 election and disenfranchise millions of voters.
After these comments, Nancy Pelosi appeared at the Tribune Festival in Texas.
Moderator Evan Smith asked Pelosi about the potential political fallout for Democrats after going through with the impeachment witch hunt.
“Heading into the next election cycle, do you have any anxiety at all about any of the stuff we’re talking about…impacting your ability to hold control of the House in 2020?” Smith pressed Pelosi.
Speaker Pelosi’s response left Democrats running for re-election in Trump districts with a knot in the pit of their stomachs.
Pelosi claimed it didn’t matter if Democrats lost the House because impeachment was the right thing to do.
“It doesn’t matter,” Pelosi told Smith. “Our first responsibility is to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
“People say you have to take a political risk doing that,” the Speaker added. “That doesn’t matter. That doesn’t matter. Because we cannot have a president of the United States undermining his oath of office, his loyalty to his oath of office, undermining our national security, and undermining the integrity of our elections.”
Despite Pelosi’s bravado, the Speaker did make one concession to Democrats in red districts like Van Drew.
For all the hype over Pelosi’s announcement that Democrats were opening an impeachment inquiry, in reality, nothing has changed.
Democrats must hold a vote on the House floor to officially open an impeachment inquiry.
Pelosi refuses to schedule such a vote because it would force Democrats in Trump districts to go on the record with regards to impeachment.
That vote would force those vulnerable incumbents to either tick off their unhinged base by voting no or infuriate the vast majority of their district by supporting a politically motivated witch hunt against President Trump.
