Chuck Schumer and the Democrats thought they had the 2018 midterms all wrapped up.
But then Donald Trump delivered his State of the Union address.
And one new poll left the Democrats wondering where it all went wrong.
The American people have rendered their verdict on Donald Trump’s first State of the Union address.
It was a resounding success.
A CBS instant poll found 75 percent of viewers approved of the speech.
72 percent of independents cheered Trump’s address.
Even 43 percent of Democrats gave it a thumbs up.

CNN found similar results.
Their survey found 70 percent had a somewhat positive or very positive reaction.

Democrats figured they could coast on a negative political environment to winning the midterms.
But Trump’s speech showed his America First agenda is popular.
It gave him a chance to promote policies that will rally the conservative base to turn out in November.
If that happens, Republicans will maintain control of Congress.
