It’s game on in the 2024 Republican presidential primary.
The top two contenders are clearly Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
And now Ron DeSantis had a surprising response to Donald Trump attacking him.
A brand-new Fox News poll showed Donald Trump leading Ron DeSantis 43 to 28 percent among GOP primary voters.
Trump reacted to the poll by posting on Truth Social that voters rejected DeSantis because of votes DeSantis took in Congress to make modest reforms to Social Security and Medicare to rein in the spending on entitlement programs that is driving America’s 31 trillion dollars in national debt.
“Great Poll numbers are springing forth for your favorite President, me, against Ron DeSanctus (& Biden). I guess people are finding out that he wanted to CUT SOCIAL SECURITY & RAISE THE MINIMUM AGE TO AT LEAST 70, at least 4 times. LIKEWISE WITH MEDICARE, WANTED BIG CUTS. HE IS A WHEELCHAIR OVER THE CLIFF KIND OF GUY, JUST LIKE HIS HERO, failed politician Paul Ryan, the FoxNews ratings destroyer who led Mitt Romney’s Presidential Campaign down the tubes. GLOBALIST’S ALL! WE WANT AMERICA FIRST!!!” Trump wrote.
Trump’s rhetoric also took some conservatives by surprise as it echoed the lies Democrats tell about Republicans wanting to kill people’s grandparents by trying to avert fiscal calamity.
Governor DeSantis responded to Trump in an interview on Brian Kilmeade’s Fox radio show.
DeSantis dismissed Trump’s criticisms as just typical Trump and passed on the opportunity to get into a war of words with Trump.
“It’s silly season,” DeSantis began. “You know how some of this stuff goes, and obviously he does his thing and that’s kind of who he is. But, what I wanted to do was give an honest appraisal of how we got to this point, the failures of the DC Republican establishment and how Donald Trump was speaking to things that some of the old guard refused to address.”
DeSantis then hinted about how he would approach Trump in a primary campaign by telling Kilmeade that he was happy to praise Trump when he was right, but would not hesitate to say if he thought Trump was wrong.
“I always give him credit for the things that he did that were positive, and I’m appreciative of a lot of things that he did,” DeSantis added. “Doesn’t mean I agree with everything that he’s doing lately or whatever, but ultimately it’s about delivering for the people you represent and delivering for the country, so I wasn’t really into kind of trying to throw pot shots at anybody.”
DeSantis is still several months away from announcing his campaign.
But the battle lines in the upcoming primary fight between Trump and DeSantis are already clear to everyone.
