Washington is always on the lookout for any sign that a Supreme Court Justice is about to retire.
A Supreme Court vacancy sets up the nastiest fights in American politics.
And Americans are bracing for the worst after this Supreme Court Justice just made a life-changing announcement.
Retirement rumors have swirled around conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas for months.
Thomas repeatedly denied he had any intention of stepping down, but that speculation bubbled up again with the announcement that PBS would air a documentary about his life in May.
Conservative filmmaker Michael Pack put the film “Created Equal: Clarence Thomas In His Own Words” together as an opportunity for Thomas to tell his life story in his own words.
No telling of Thomas’s life story could be complete without an examination of Anita Hill smearing Thomas with false allegations of sexual harassment during Thomas’s 1991 confirmation hearing.
Thomas told the filmmakers that the ordeal demonstrated to him that “There’s different sets of rules for different people.”
What Thomas meant by that is as a black conservative, the fake news media would never give him the benefit of the doubt.
Thomas explained that criticism of him was fair game while criticizing a liberal black politician like Barack Obama was automatically deemed racist.
“If you criticize a black person who’s more liberal, you’re a racist. Whereas you can do whatever to me, or to now [Housing and Urban Development Secretary] Ben Carson, and that’s fine, because you’re not really black because you’re not doing what we expect black people to do,” Thomas continued.
“‘This is the wrong black guy, he has to be destroyed,’” Thomas added. “Just say it. And now at least we’re honest with each other.”
Thomas went on to surmise that the only reason Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee – which was led by Delaware Senator Joe Biden at that time – sought to destroy was because they knew Thomas was a pro-life champion that would vote to correct the horrendous Roe v. Wade decision.
“Most of my opponents on the Judiciary Committee cared about only one thing: how would I rule on abortion rights?” Thomas explained. “You really didn’t matter, and your life didn’t matter. What mattered was what they wanted. And what they wanted was this particular issue.”
“The idea was to get rid of me,” Thomas continued. “And then after I was there, it was to undermine me.”
In conclusion, Justice Thomas admitted that he had made one major error in his life.
Thomas claimed the left’s attempt to smear him with fake news and lies and sexually harassing Anita Hill showed him that the ‘bigot, Klansman, and rural sheriff’ were not the biggest roadblocks to him succeeding in life.
“It turned out that through all of that, ultimately the biggest impediment was the modern-day liberal,” Thomas concluded.
