Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez led the charge to defund the police.
But this fight blew up in her face.
Trey Gowdy dropped the hammer on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez with one reality check.
Former Congressman Trey Gowdy tore into politicians – like Ocasio-Cortez– that support defunding the police by pointing out that none of their activism matters if the streets are unsafe to walk.
“Politics is of very little significance if you’re dead, injured, robbed or assaulted,” Gowdy began. “I never had a political conversation with a crime victim or a cop or a fellow prosecutor, never. Public safety is too important to be just another political tool.”
Crime is spiking in cities across America after the Black Lives Matter riots.
In response, politicians like Ocasio-Cortez pushed to defund the police to predictably disastrous results.
Murders in major American cities were up 30 percent in 2020 and another 24 percent in 2021.
Gowdy explained that maintaining law and order is the core function of government, and a surge in crime meant elected officials failed at their most important job.
“When I see spikes in crime, I view it as both proof of why we have government in the first place, which is because everyone cannot be counted on to treat their fellow citizens with respect and dignity,” Gowdy stated. “And I also view rising crime rates as a failure of government to meet its number one priority.”
Ocasio-Cortez and other supporters of defunding the police promote the idea of “reimagining” law enforcement by sending out social workers to respond to some 9-1-1 calls.
Gowdy blasted the idea of replacing cops with social workers as ridiculous in the face of a violent crime wave raging in cities across the country.
“You let me know if that is the first thing you think of when you are being assaulted on a subway or you hear someone breaking into your house or God forbid someone pulls a weapon on you,” Gowdy continued. “You let me know whether you want to call social workers and psychologists or call the police.”
Gowdy stated that the failure to protect public safety was a failure of citizenship.
“The true test of citizenship is can you follow a law you disagree with?” Gowdy declared. “Can you act responsibly when you are disappointed? Either we are a nation of laws or we are not. And when I reflect on the rising homicide or murder rates, I think of all the promise and potential this country offers.”
Polls show crime is an issue of growing importance to Americans.
That’s a problem for defund the police advocates like Ocasio-Cortez.
One year after politicians began attacking police as racist killers, the citizens they serve are living through the deadly consequences.
