The Democrat Party is slowly waking up to one harsh reality.
And that is the fact that impeachment is backfiring and the one politician in America that has the most to lose is Joe Biden.
That became clear when Trey Gowdy dropped the hammer on this scandal that left Joe Biden in ruins.
Democrats denied Republicans the right to call witnesses in the House impeachment inquiry because the President would demand Joe Biden answer questions about payoffs from the corrupt Ukrainian energy company Burisma to Biden’s son, Hunter.
But now that the action is in the Republican-controlled Senate, Republicans are warning Democrats that if Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer push their blackmail scheme to allow the Democrats to call witnesses, then the President will be entitled to call witnesses starting with Joe Biden.
In an interview with NPR, Biden declared he would defy a Senate subpoena to testify at an impeachment trial.
“The reason I wouldn’t is because it’s all designed to deal with Trump doing what he’s done his whole life: trying to take the focus off him,” Biden told NPR, “The issue is not what I did.”
In an interview with the Des Moines Register editorial board, Biden doubled down claiming that him testifying would detract from Donald Trump’s supposed “crimes.”
“What are you going to cover?” Biden said to Register Executive Editor Carol Hunter in response to a question. “You guys are going to cover for three weeks anything that I said. And (Trump’s) going to get away. You guys buy into it all the time. Not a joke … Think what it’s about. It’s all about what he does all the time, his entire career. Take the focus off. This guy violated the Constitution. He said it in the driveway of the White House. He acknowledged he asked for help.”
Appearing on Fox News with former Congressman Jason Chaffetz, Trey Gowdy pointed out the obvious flaw in Biden’s stance on refusing to comply with a lawful subpoena to testify.
Gowdy noted that Democrats impeached President Trump on the charge of obstruction of Congress despite the President exercising his lawful authority to assert executive privilege.
Biden owns no such privilege to ignore a subpoena to testify.
“If you don’t like Joe Biden’s answer, just wait about an hour and he’ll give you the exact opposite,” Gowdy told Chaffetz. “I found it dumbfounding. He single-handedly gutted one of the two articles of impeachment. When he said, ‘By the way, you all are trying to remove a president from office for doing what I just promised to do.'”
“While these Democrats are supporting Biden, it’s the exact same conduct,” Gowdy added. “He’s not going to comply with a subpoena, which is what one of the two articles of impeachment against Trump is.”
Biden realized he was in the soup by undercutting the Democrats’ impeachment argument and quickly retreated.
“I want to clarify something I said yesterday. In my 40 years in public life, I have always complied with a lawful order and in my eight years as VP, my office — unlike Donald Trump and Mike Pence — cooperated with legitimate congressional oversight requests,” Biden wrote on social media.
But Biden’s clarification was too late and the damage was already done.
