The crime spike in major cities became a deciding issue for voters in 2020.
Republicans won every tossup race in the House of Representatives in part because Democrats’ calls to defund the police repelled swing voters.
Top Democrats quickly wanted to move away from the soft-on-crime image the “Defund the Police” movement created in the minds of Americans.
That task became much harder thanks to Trey Gowdy’s reporting.
During a recent broadcast of his Fox News Sunday night primetime show, the former South Carolina congressman told viewers that the city governments in New York and San Francisco instituted programs to pay violent criminals not to shoot one another.
The city of San Francisco is paying ten criminals 300 dollars a month not to shoot city residents when they commit crimes.
New York City is going even further paying criminals $1,000 a month not to shoot people.
Gowdy expressed amazement that such a proposal could even be real.
“Occasionally, you hear or read something and think, ‘that can’t be right. Surely I must have read or heard that wrong,’” Gowdy stated. “And that was precisely my reaction when I read San Francisco and New York were going to pay people not to shoot one another or otherwise commit violent crimes.”
Gowdy fumed that at a time when Democrats wanted to defund the police, they wanted to put money in the pockets of hardcore criminals, calling it “extortion.”
“I just never thought government or any other noncriminal enterprise would actually encourage this kind of shakedown or extortion,” Gowdy added. “Think about where we are as a country right now. Some progressives are advocating for cutting funding for the cops but paying criminals so they will stop at least until the check clears being criminals.”
Former Congressman Gowdy added that liberals didn’t need to fork over taxpayer money to stop criminals.
Instead, they could just promote education.
“What a mess this culture is in. The taxpayers in this country already spend a lot of money to prevent crime. The number one crime prevention strategy we have is called school. It’s called an education. You want to reduce crime? Make kids get an education,” Gowdy stated.
“This country already provides a ladder for those who want to ascend, and a safety net to catch those who fall. But apparently, that isn’t enough. Now we must also pay you not to kill us,” Gowdy concluded.
