A major Democrat thought his career was over when the police burst into his hotel room.
But now he’s trying to enter public life again.
A top Democrat is hoping to avoid his huge sex scandal with this statement.
On March 13, police found former Democrat Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum too inebriated to speak in a hotel room filled with methamphetamine and in the company of a man who said he was a male escort.
The police responded to reports that a man had overdosed on meth.
Gillum claimed that while he was intoxicated and naked, he had not used methamphetamine and that the escort was a mere friend.
“I was in Miami last night for a wedding celebration when first responders were called to assist one of my friends,” Gillum said a statement at the time. “While I had too much to drink, I want to be clear that I have never used methamphetamines. I apologize to the people of Florida for the distraction this has caused our movement.”
He said he was stepping down from all public-facing roles for the “foreseeable future” and went to rehab, and now six months later is trying to reenter public life.
“I apologize to the people of Florida for the distraction this has caused our movement. I’m thankful to the incredible Miami Beach EMS team for their efforts. I will spend the next few weeks with my family and appreciate privacy during this time,” he said in March.
Gillum has got the perfect tool for his comeback since he has now come out as bisexual.
“I don’t identify as gay but I do identify as bisexual,” Gillum said on Monday. “And that is something that I have never shared publicly before.”
This is hardly a startling confession since he was caught in a hotel room with a man who claimed to belong to an escort service, the whole world had already guessed that he wasn’t completely straight.
This isn’t a bold admission, it’s a political maneuver.
His next steps can be to claim that anyone who doesn’t think that he should return to public life is “homophobic.”
Yet his sexual orientationisn’t what caused the scandal; had Gillum, a married man, been found in a hotel room with meth and a female escort service, there would still have been the same scandal, and if Gillum had come forward and said he was bisexual no one would have cared.
The Democrats are trying to use their identity to help excuse their behavior.
Gillum said that he is considering making the difficult jump back into politics because of Trump.
“Would it be hard? Absolutely,” he said. “But Donald Trump is president.”
