Adam Schiff used the Russian collusion hoax and the impeachment witch hunt to become one of the most controversial members of Congress.
Schiff’s high profile became a constant source of embarrassment for Democrats.
And now Adam Schiff took this new job that had everyone in America talking.
After a one-month delay in a failed attempt to force Republicans to accept Democrats’ demands for new witnesses in a Senate trial, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats finally voted to transmit the articles of impeachment to the Senate.
As part of the process of initiating a Senate trial, Pelosi named the House managers that would try the case.
“What is at stake here is the Constitution of the United States. This is what an impeachment is about,” Pelosi told reporters at a press conference naming the managers.
Pelosi revealed that House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler would lead the seven-member team.
Congressman Hakeem Jeffries – rumored as a possible Pelosi successor – California Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, Congresswoman Val Demings, Congressman Jason Crow and Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia rounded out the group of managers.
Six of the seven House Managers previously served as prosecutors, a job experience Pelosi claimed was vital in her decision making process.
“The emphasis is on litigators. The emphasis is on comfort level in the courtroom,” Pelosi said, explaining the team she assembled. “The emphasis is on making the strongest case to protect our Constitution.”
Adam Schiff posted on social media his gratitude for Pelosi selecting him to head up the Democrats’ impeachment prosecution.
“I’m humbled by the solemn responsibility of serving as lead House Manager in the Senate impeachment trial. Together, the Managers will work on behalf of the American people in defense of our Constitution. The House upheld our Constitutional duty. The Senate must do the same,” Schiff tweeted.
But not everyone thought Pelosi choosing Schiff was a master stroke.
Conservative commentator Hugh Hewitt mocked Schiff’s selection and claimed forcing Senators to listen to Schiff’s grandstanding for 24 hours amounted to “criminal assault.”
“The collective cringe that ran through all 100 senators at having to listen to 24 hours of ‘argument’ from this not-so-magnificent-seven must have been instant. Recall the senators have to sit, quietly, at their desks. This is close to criminal assault,” Hewitt snarked.
Senators jealously guard their independence from the House.
The last thing 100 Senators want is Adam Schiff making a spectacle of himself – as Schiff did during a Congressional hearing when he fabricated the contents of President Trump’s July 25 phone call with the Ukrainian President – on the Senate floor.
Pelosi choosing Adam Schiff to quarterback the team of House Managers was not designed to win over any Republicans thought to be considering voting in favor of articles of impeachment.
In fact, Schiff’s presence is likely to alienate those swing votes.
Instead, Pelosi hopes Schiff’s ability to perform in television helps Democrats in the court of public opinion and damages President Trump heading into the 2020 election.
But given that the President’s approval numbers rose after Schiff’s weeks-long Stalinist show trial in the House, putting Schiff front and center on impeachment could once again burn Democrats.
