House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have been at odds since Ocasio-Cortez first entered Congress.
Ocasio-Cortez made subtle moves to challenge Pelosi’s leadership.
And now Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Nancy Pelosi are at war after this jaw-dropping leak.
New York Times reporters Alexander Burns and Jonathan Martin’s new book “This Will Not Pass” contains the scoop on what Nancy Pelosi really thinks about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her fellow socialists.
Burns and Martin reported that Pelosi felt annoyed she had to beg leftists in Congress for their votes to be speaker after the Democrats suffered unexpected defeats in the 2020 election.
“The experience of begging for support was wearing on her. .. Pelosi was the only Democrat in the chamber — the only Democrat alive — who had already served as Speaker, who had shown she could do the legislative arithmetic and twist the necessary arms to get things done. And yet [her fellow Democrats] were making her grovel. ‘At this point in my life, I don’t need this,’ she vented,” Burns and Martin wrote.
Heading into the election Pelosi boasted that Democrats would win 15 to 20 new seats.
Instead, Republicans posted double-digit gains and swept all 27 toss-up races.
Many top Democrats blamed those losses on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez branding the Democrat Party as the party of defunding the police and socialism.
“In a few strictly confidential conversations she pointed a finger leftward. Pelosi told one senior lawmaker that Democrats had alienated Asian and Hispanic immigrants with loose talk of socialism. In some of the same communities, the Italian Catholic speaker said, Democrats had not been careful enough about the way they spoke about abortion among new Americans who were devout people of faith,” Martin and Burns added.
Martin and Burns recounted another story about Ocasio-Cortez and her fellow socialists holding up a vote on a fake $1.2 trillion so-called “infrastructure” bill in order to try and lock down support for a nearly $5 trillion socialist budget reconciliation bill.
Pelosi ranted that Ocasio-Cortez and Washington Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal fought over who could be the “queen bee” of the left.
However, Pelosi fretted that the socialists exerting such control of the Democrats’ message would create a voter backlash that would send Democrats back to the minority.
“During the infrastructure vote, Pelosi was angry ‘and in private she vented about the progressive blockade that had forced her to cancel the infrastructure vote. … She told another House Democrat that Pramila Jayapal and Ocasio-Cortez were vying to be the ‘queen bee’ of the left, but that their reward might be serving in the House minority after the next election,” Martin and Burns wrote.
It is heavily rumored that Pelosi will retire after the midterm elections.
No longer having to placate the left apparently afforded Pelosi the freedom to say what she really thought about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
