Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is the most radical new member of the Democratic Party in Congress.
But her brief stint of being in the political limelight may soon be over.
The socialist superstar was blindsided by this massive scandal that could bring her down.
New York socialist congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has seen the most meteoric rise in American politics since perhaps President Donald Trump.
But the Democratic freshman congresswoman may soon see her star fall just as swiftly as it rose.
Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign could be in some serious legal trouble if this campaign finance scandal continues to play out.
The Daily Caller reports, “Freshman Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez blew off several ethics complaints, claiming that they were just ‘random claims’ filed by ‘GOP troll groups.’”
The “GOP troll groups” she refers to may have found a bombshell in her finance reports that, if exploded, could sink her political career overnight.
“The Coolidge Reagan Foundation, a nonprofit, filed an ethics complaint last week alleging that Ocasio-Cortez had used House resources for personal means when she allowed her boyfriend to obtain a House.gov email address. The complaint also alleged that she obtained the email address by falsely listing him as a staff member,” reports the Daily Caller.
The crux of the issue goes back to Ocasio-Cortez’s staff.
She originally claimed that it was perfectly normal for spouses of House members to have email addresses that would allow them access to the member’s calendar. She made no comment regarding the claim that she had falsely designated her own boyfriend as a staff member.
What looked like an old-fashioned case of nepotism soon boiled over into a full-blown scandal over her campaign finance reports, however.
“National Legal and Policy Center had filed a complaint with the FEC alleging an incestuous relationship between Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign and Justice Democrats — a PAC which was at the time controlled by the congresswoman and her chief of staff, Saikat Chakrabarti — in addition to possible campaign finance violations,” adds the Daily Caller.
The complaint issued by the National Legal and Policy Center seem absolutely damning too.
“It appears that Respondents orchestrated an extensive off-the-books operation to make hundreds of thousands of dollars of expenditures in support of multiple candidates for federal office,” states the complaint.
“The relationship between the Respondents appears to be incestuous, with the likelihood that they were aware, or should have been aware, of the sweeping and apparently illegal nature of the enterprise.”
Apparently, Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign was nothing more than a vehicle to funnel hundreds of thousands of dollars to the man who now serves as her Chief of Staff.
Former FEC commissioner Brad Smith described the finance reporting scandal as one of, “massive reporting violations” with “probably at least some illegal contribution violations exceeding the lawful limits.”
If Ocasio-Cortez is found to have been in violation of the FEC rules, any number of punishments could be handed down upon her, her Chief of Staff, her campaign operatives, or all of them at once.
