Ever since she entered Congress, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez emerged as the leader of the Democrat Party.
Ocasio-Cortez leveraged her massive social media following to yank the Democrats to the far-left by adopting her socialist policy platform.
But now Ocasio-Cortez left jaws on the ground with one announcement about what she is quitting.
Ocasio-Cortez owes her superstardom to her social media savvy.
The freshmen Congresswoman has just under four million Twitter followers, over three million Instagram followers, and over seven hundred thousand Facebook fans.
Her Instagram live streams and tweets regularly go viral—which has helped force the Democrats running for President to hug her every loony policy proposal.
However, Ocasio-Cortez shocked officials in Washington when she announced she was quitting Facebook and cutting back on her use of Instagram and Twitter to just Monday through Friday.
The New York Democrat exclaimed in an interview on Yahoo News’ “Skullduggery” podcast that excessive social media use presented a “health risk” that she could no longer tolerate.
“I actually think that social media poses a public health risk to everybody,” Ocasio-Cortez declared. “There are amplified impacts for young people, particularly children under the age of 3 with screen time. But I think it has a lot of effects on older people. I think it has effects on everybody. Increased isolation, depression, anxiety, addiction, escapism.”
“Like every once in a while, you’ll see me hop on Twitter on the weekends, but for the most part, I take consumption of content, when it comes to consumption and reading, I take the weekends off,” Ocasio-Cortez stated.
Ocasio-Cortez’s declaration that social media was a “public health risk” raises eyebrows.
Ever since Donald Trump won the 2016 election, liberals have set their sights on regulating – and ultimately shutting down – all online avenues for conservatives to share their views and spread their message.
Many Democrats blame Twitter and Facebook for allowing Donald Trump and the Russians to brainwash voters into opposing Hillary Clinton.
Critics contend that the social-media savvy Ocasio-Cortez suddenly labeling Twitter and Facebook as public health threats is just another brick in the road to government regulation of online speech.
The left wants to control the flow of information for everyday Americans.
Declaring social media a public health risk is an open invitation for liberals to swoop in with legislation that regulates social media and what type of content is permissible under the guise of protecting the nation’s well-being.
Liberals have no problem with CNN, the New York Times, and the Washington Post spreading fake news, conspiracy theories, and misinformation on social media.
Some conservatives, like former Trump chief strategist Steve Bannon, see how social media companies are run by left-wing ideologues—who take their social cues from their liberal workforces in order to ban or suppress conservative speech—and believe these companies need to be regulated like public utilities or publishers so that First Amendment protections apply to users.
Other conservatives maintain that any government involvement in social media will only backfire and hand the left more power.
This debate will only take on greater importance as the left continues to agitate for complete government regulation of social media platforms.
