All hell is about to break loose in Congress.
Once again, the drama centers around New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
And that’s because Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez received a letter that contained brutal life-changing news.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is now under investigation by the House Ethics Committee.
A committee letter explained that Ocasio-Cortez was under investigation but not for what.
The House Ethics Committee’s statement read:
Pursuant to House Rule XI, clause 3(b)(8)(A), and Committee Rules 17A(b)(1)(A), 17A(c)(1), and 17A(j), the Acting Chairwoman and Acting Ranking Member of the Committee on Ethics have jointly decided to extend the matter regarding Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, which was transmitted to the Committee by the Office of Congressional Ethics on June 23, 2022.
The Committee notes that the mere fact of a referral or an extension, and the mandatory disclosure of such an extension and the name of the subject of the matter, does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred, or reflect any judgment on behalf of the Committee.
The Committee will announce its course of action in this matter following its organizational meeting and adoption of Committee Rules in the 118th Congress.
Ocasio-Cortez’s spokeswoman Lauren Hitt tried to downplay the investigation into Ocasio-Cortez.
“The Congresswoman has always taken ethics incredibly seriously, refusing any donations from lobbyists, corporations, or other special interests,” Hitt stated. “We are confident that this matter will be dismissed.”
The investigation into Ocasio-Cortez might stem from a complaint filed by the watchdog American Accountability Foundation over Ocasio-Cortez’s appearance at the 2021 Met Gala.
Ocasio-Cortez did not pay for a ticket to the gala – which costs $35,000 to attend – in violation of House rules against accepting gifts.
“There are serious questions about whether or not her ticket — donated or purchased with campaign funds — was permissible under the code of congressional ethics,” an American Accountability Foundation statement read.
“These rules exist for a reason. Without strict adherence, we run the risk of corruption in the halls of Congress and public officials serving others over their constituents. Government has a responsibility to its citizens, and integrity and accountability should be our foremost concern,” the statement added.
At the Met Gala – which again cost $35,000 to attend – Ocasio-Cortez famously wore a dress with “tax the rich” painted on the back.
It was the kind of mindless performance art and vapid virtue signaling that Ocasio-Cortez excels at.
Bragging about taxing the rich while sitting down at a gala where celebrities revel in their own decadence is the modern-day version of “let them eat cake.”
But Ocasio-Cortez’s stunt – which she treated like a big joke – now could prove costly as it may be at the center of a House Ethics Committee investigation.
