Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez judged this American hero by the color of his skin.
She won’t even consider his courageous sacrifice.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wants to destroy this hero who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized Hawaii’s choice of statues to represent them in the Capitol.
She threw a fit because Hawaii has the statue of St. Damien of Molokai representing their state, calling it a symbol of “white supremacy.”
She also claimed that St. Damien was a “colonizer.”
St. Damien immigrated to Hawaii from Belgium and went to help care for native Hawaiians at a leper colony.
Leprosy was thought to be a highly contagious disease at the time and the Hawaiian government had passed legislation to quarantine people with the illness in a leper colony for the rest of their lives.
St. Damien went to the leper colony knowing full well that he was placing himself in danger of a slow and painful death.
For years, St. Damien did everything possible to minister to the needs of the native Hawaiians, building houses, caring for the sick, helping grow food, living in exactly the same living conditions as the lepers he was caring for.
He died of leprosy when he was just in his 40s.
He freely gave up everything in order to help provide healthcare, housing and food for the most marginalized in society, even Ocasio-Cortez should be willing to give him credit.
The Archdiocese of Los Angeles took time to call out Ocasio-Cortez’s criticisms of St. Damien.
“Just taking a couple minutes out of my day here because I felt the need to respond to something I came across that was just so outrageous,” said Bishop Robert Barron in a two-tweet response to Ocasio-Cortez. “It was a tweet, or an Instagram or something from Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and she was complaining about the presence of a statue in Statuary Hall in the Capitol building that she thought was a sign of colonialism and white supremacy.”
Barron, chuckling, continued, “The statue that she picked out, of all the possible ones, was of St. Damien of Molokai. And I thought it was so crazy and outrageous, and I wondered, did she have any idea who St. Damien of Molokai was?”
Instead of St. Damien,Ocasio-Cortez wants to have a statue of Queen Liliuokalani to replace him.
Ocasio-Cortez claims to hate privilege but royalty is the ultimate expression of hereditary privilege.
Queen Liliuokalani was native Hawaiian and a woman, but she lived in a palace with servants to wait on her while St. Damien had none of those luxuries.
This is the insanity that happens with the left’s identity politics, when a person’s privileges in life are judged by simplistic measure like their race and color of their skin instead of treating people like individuals.
