Donald Trump already upended the political world by winning the presidency once.
But the establishment was not prepared for what was going to happen next.
And all hell broke loose when Donald Trump dropped one huge 2024 announcement.
The GOP establishment thinks now is their chance to purge Donald Trump and his conservative supporters from the party.
But Trump sent a warning shot that if party elites try to manipulate the nomination process Trump will run as an independent candidate in the general election.
Republicans’ weak showing in the midterm elections led some conservatives to blame Trump for endorsing weak and unelectable candidates like Dr. Oz.
Even though Donald Trump announced he is running for re-election there is no chance Trump will get a free shot at the nomination.
Polls show that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is running essentially even or — in some cases — leading Trump.
But while Trump and DeSantis are the favored candidates of the GOP base, RINOs like Nikki Haley, Larry Hogan, Tim Scott and establishment Republicans Mike Pence, Mike Pompeo and Glenn Youngkin are also poised to jump into the race.
This dynamic threatens to recreate the GOP split of 1912 where former President Teddy Roosevelt challenged incumbent Republican President William Howard Taft.
Trump shared an article to his Truth Social platform authored by American Greatness contributor Dan Gelernter about that election.
Gelernter wrote that while GOP voters sided with Roosevelt party bosses picked Taft.
Elites rejecting the will of the voters led Roosevelt to run as a third-party candidate under the Progressive Party banner.
Roosevelt running third-party created a schism in the GOP vote allowing Democrat nominee Woodrow Wilson to sneak into the White House with just 41 percent of the vote.
In his article Gelernter warned Republicans threatened to recreate this dynamic if establishment Republicans try to manipulate the nomination process.
Gelernter wrote:
The Republican Party of 1912 decided it would be better off renominating William Howard Taft, even though its voters would have preferred another Roosevelt term. The resulting split ushered in Woodrow Wilson and the first academic globalists, whose bright ideas laid the groundwork for a second world war on the eve of the conclusion of the first.
But, despite the obvious differences, we’re heading for a 1912-repeat, in which the Republican Party ignores its own voters. The Republican machine has no intention of letting us choose Trump again: He is not a uniparty team player. They’d rather lose an election to the Democrats, their brothers in crime, than win with Trump.
Conservatives support both Trump and DeSantis.
But many conservatives worry Trump and DeSantis will split the vote in the primary allowing a RINO like Tim Scott or a handpicked establishment moderate like Pence or Youngkin to run up the middle to win the nomination.
In that event, Donald Trump is threatening to run third-party as a method of keeping the GOP establishment in check.
