Russian President Vladimir Putin continued his brinksmanship with his military invasion of Ukraine.
Now Putin is approaching the point of no return.
And all hell broke loose when Vladimir Putin gave this scary order.
After several days of stalled military progress and the West crippling Russia’s economy with sanctions, Putin rattled the nuclear saber.
Putin announced he ordered his nuclear forces on high alert in response to America and other countries sanctioning Russia and sending arms to Ukrainian forces fighting the Russian invaders.
“Western countries aren’t only taking unfriendly actions against our country in the economic sphere, but top officials from leading NATO members made aggressive statements regarding our country,” Putin declared.
Putin’s aggressive nuclear posture worried observers around the world.
“He is right now threatening a nuclear escalation,” former DIA intelligence officer Rebekah Koffler said in an interview with Fox News. “This a veiled threat – or maybe such a veiled threat – he just met with his chief of general staff and minister of defense. He is escalating the conflict into the nuclear domain in order to de-escalate – that is topple Kyiv’s regime quickly.”
The Biden administration condemned Putin even threatening to deploy his nuclear forces.
“It means that President Putin is continuing to escalate this war in a manner that is totally unacceptable and we have to continue to stem his actions in the strongest possible way,” United Nations Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield told CBS.
Fortunately, Putin’s threat was more bravado than anything else at this point.
U.S. officials reported seeing no change in the posture of Russia’s nuclear forces.
Russia owns the world’s largest nuclear stockpile.
The point of having thousands of nuclear weapons is a strategic deterrent to ward off an attack.
But since President Truman ordered the military to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, no country’s used nuclear weapons.
When Russia moved nuclear missiles 90 miles off the U.S. shore in October 1962 the world nearly faced the reality of a nuclear holocaust.
Putin’s mad invasion of Ukraine is the greatest threat to world peace and stability in the last 60 years.
When Ronald Reagan won the Cold War without having to fire a shot Americans thought their days of fearing the Soviet nuclear menace were over.
Vladimir Putin changed that calculus.
The Ukrainian forces resisting the Russian invasion performed heroically and more effectively than anyone could have imagined.
And other European countries rallied around the approach of sanctioning Russia’s economy.
Putin underestimated the level of resistance both in Ukraine and around the globe to his mad plan to invade Ukraine and re-establish the old Soviet Union.
That led Putin to warn he could unleash his nuclear arsenal.
This is now the highest stakes threat facing the globe.
