Democrats are proceeding with two articles of impeachment against Donald Trump.
But a major curveball just got thrown the Democrats’ way.
And now all hell broke when Trump found out the Democrats’ next move on impeachment.
The American people are turning against impeachment.
A brand new Quinnipiac Poll found 51 percent of voters opposed impeaching and removing Donald Trump from office.
That represented an increase from 48 percent in a Quinnipiac Poll taking place just before Thanksgiving.
After the American people digested multiple hearings in the House Intelligence and Judiciary Committee with witness and legal expert testimony, the public judged the Democrats failed to make the case.
In addition, Firehouse Strategies polls in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin show Donald Trump leading all his major Democrat rivals as voters in those battleground states rejected impeachment.
Democrats in the House that represent the districts that will determine which party holds the majority in January 2021 are beginning to panic.
And reports are surfacing that Democrats in districts the President carried in 2016 are searching for an escape hatch from a politically disastrous impeachment vote.
POLITICO exclusively reports:
A small group of vulnerable House Democrats is floating the longshot idea of censuring President Donald Trump instead of impeaching him, according to multiple lawmakers familiar with the conversations.
Those Democrats, all representing districts that Trump won in 2016, huddled on Monday afternoon in an 11th-hour bid to weigh additional — though unlikely — options to punish the president for his role in the Ukraine scandal as the House speeds toward an impeachment vote next week.
Censure is likely a nonstarter.
Donald Trump opposes a censure resolution that falsely accuses him of wrongdoing so there is no incentive for Republicans to support a censure resolution.
Republicans would also rather squeeze Democrats on the impeachment vote.
If Democrats in the 31 districts Donald Trump carried in 2016 support impeachment, they will alienate the majority of their constituents.
But if these swing district Democrats oppose impeachment their base will stay home in November and their political goose is cooked.
Democrats can only afford to lose 17 votes on articles of impeachment.
That’s why Nancy Pelosi, Adam Schiff and Jerry Nadler shaped the narrowest articles of impeachment possible to try and minimize Democrat defections.
A group of 10 to 12 Democrats floating a censure resolution is not enough to tank articles of impeachment in the expected floor vote.
But it is enough to prove politically embarrassing for the Democrats.
Beyond the humiliation of Democrats joining the Republicans to reject Nancy Pelosi’s personally approved articles of impeachment is the cold hard truth that Democrats whose livelihoods depend on being able to accurately judge the mood of voters understand that impeachment is the anchor that threatens to sink the Democrats in 2020.
Impeachment has Democrats outside of the coastal citadels in deep blue states running scared.
