Barack Obama and Donald Trump are bitter rivals.
Their feud goes back over a decade.
But Barack Obama picked one fight with Trump that may backfire in one major way.
In an interview with Anderson Cooper that aired on CNN, Barack Obama attacked Donald Trump, Fox News and the Republican establishment for being complicit in the January 6 episode.
Obama recycled some of the Democrats’ greatest hits of falsehoods such as claiming Trump called neo-Nazis at Charlottesville “very fine people” and alluding to the Russian collusion hoax as evidence the GOP establishment should have thrown Trump overboard long ago.
“I thought that there were guard rails, institutionally, that even after Trump was elected that you would have the so-called Republican establishment who would say, ‘Ok, you know, it’s a problem if the White House doesn’t seem to be concerned about Russian meddling,’ or, ‘It’s a problem if we have a president who’s saying that neo-Nazis marching in Charlottesville, ‘‘There are good people on both sides.’’ That’s a little bit beyond the pale,” Obama began.
Obama claimed that anyone who tolerated Trump challenging the results of the 2020 election bore responsibility for what happened next.
“And the degree to which we did not see that Republican establishment say, ‘Hold on, time-out. That’s not acceptable. That’s not who we are,’ but rather be cowed into accepting it, and then finally culminating in January 6th where what originally was, ‘Oh don’t worry, this isn’t going anywhere. We’re just letting Trump and others vent,’ and then suddenly you now have large portions of an elected Congress going along with the falsehood that there were problems with the election,” Obama added.
Obama alleged that Trump supporters who believe that the election was stolen got brainwashed by a combination of Fox News and Donald Trump.
“Suddenly, everybody was back in line. Now, the reason for that is because the base believed it. The base believed it because this had been told to them not just by the president, but by the media that they watch and nobody stood up and said, ‘Stop. This is enough. This is not true.’ I won’t say nobody. Let me correct it. There were some very brave people who did their jobs, like the secretary of state in Georgia, who was then viciously attacked for it. And all those congressmen started looking around and they said, ‘You know what? I’ll lose my job. I’ll get voted out of office.’ Another way of saying this is, I didn’t expect that there would be so few people who would say, ‘Well, I don’t mind losing my office because this is too important. America’s too important.’” Obama continued.
Obama’s stepped up his public criticism of Trump.
But that has the potential to blow up in the Democrats’ faces.
In 2011, Barack Obama made fun of Trump during Obama’s comedy set during the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner.
Trump promoting investigations into Obama’s birth certificate while floating the idea of entering the 2012 Republican presidential primary.
But Obama mocking Trump to his face did not have the intended effect.
Obama wanted to put the issue of his birth certificate to rest and decimate a potential political rival.
While Trump passed on the 2012 race to re-up with NBC to make more seasons of “The Apprentice,” many feel that Obama’s mockery inspired Trump to seek the presidency in 2016.
If Barack Obama continues to needle Trump about the 2020 race it may turn out that history repeats itself where Trump launches another White House bid in large part as a response to Barack Obama’s taunts.
