Tucker Carlson and Bill O’Reilly were once colleagues at Fox News.
But since Fox News fired O’Reilly the two saw their career paths diverge.
And Bill O’Reilly was left speechless after facing this question about Tucker Carlson.
Tucker Carlson took over Bill O’Reilly’s time slot after Fox News jettisoned O’Reilly back in 2017.
Since taking over the 8 p.m. hour Carlson became the highest-rated talk show host in the history of cable news drawing over five million viewers per night during the 2020 election.
In an interview with Newsmax host Eric Bolling, O’Reilly was left stunned into silence over questions about Carlson running for president.
“I got another one for you on the Republican side that no one’s really talking about,” Bolling asked O’Reilly at the end of a discussion about potential 2024 GOP candidates before saying, “Ready? Tucker Carlson.”
O’Reilly sat in silence for six seconds.
“Speechless,” Bolling exclaimed.
That caused O’Reilly to wonder why Bolling wanted him to comment on a potential presidential campaign by the man who took over his time slot.
“You want me to reply to that, Bolling?” O’Reilly shot back. “Or is this a flight of fancy on your part?”
Bolling told O’Reilly he hosted a talk show and on a talk show, the host asks questions.
“Yes,” Bolling responded. “It’s called a talk show, so we hope when I say something, you talk back. What do you think of that?”
O’Reilly finally answered the question telling Bolling that he did not think Carlson would walk away from a plum TV anchor job that paid him millions of dollars per year to run for president.
And O’Reilly did not believe Carlson would win even if he ran.
“Look, if Mr. Carlson wants to leave his extremely lucrative position at Fox News and run for president, then more power to him. But there isn’t a chance in hell that, number one, he will do it, and number two, that he could succeed,” O’Reilly stated.
After the 2020 election POLITICO published a major piece reporting that GOP donors in New York thought Tucker Carlson – who drew bigger ratings than the NBA finals in the run up to the 2020 election – articulated a brand of populist conservatism that could win a national election.
Carlson strongly denied ever having any interest in running for president then and every subsequent time he was asked the question.
The 2024 Republican presidential primary figures to be wide open.
Even if Donald Trump runs for president, Texas Senator Ted Cruz, former Vice President Mike Pence, and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo all figure to run against Trump for the nomination.
And in recent weeks it’s become clear that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is eyeing a presidential campaign.
There may be as many as 20 Republicans running for president in two years.
But one of those candidates will not be Tucker Carlson.
