There is no question that Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats are marching toward impeaching Donald Trump.
The big question remaining is how the impeachment process will play into 2020.
And this brand new poll on impeachment delivered Donald Trump the shock of his life.
The first poll on impeachment showed this fight is still a raging dumpster fire for Democrats.
A brand new Politico/Morning Consult Poll found support for impeachment actually dropped from their prior week’s poll from 37 to 36 percent despite the fact that this poll was in the field when the Ukraine “scandal” was breaking in news.
49 percent of Americans said Congress should not begin impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump.
“Despite being a popular topic in the news, support for impeachment proceedings remains relatively unchanged in the past week,” Morning Consult Vice President Tyler Sinclair told Politico. “This week, 36 percent of registered voters, including 33 percent of independents and 5 percent of Republicans, support impeachment. These numbers have remained steady over the summer, with little impact from the latest whistleblower complaint centered on Ukraine so far.”
But that was not the only poll released that demonstrated impeachment represented a one-way ticket to defeat in 2020 for Democrats.
A brand new Quinnipiac poll found just 37 percent of Americans supported impeachment.
A whopping 57 percent of Americans opposed Congress nullifying the results of the 2016 election by removing President Trump from office.
There are some expectations that as Democrats actually move toward an impeachment proceeding, those numbers will change as voters shift into their partisan base camps.
Some Democrats that oppose impeachment now will get behind the idea once it becomes an official party position.
But independent voters continually oppose impeachment.
And that is unlikely to change.
Voters see impeachment as undemocratic and the political class taking the process of picking the nation’s leaders out of the hands of the American people.
There is an election next year.
Many voters reason that they should have the final say on if Donald Trump continues to serve as President.
However, Democrats have little choice but to proceed with impeachment.
That’s because the party base turned out last November and voted the Democrats into power in the House for the express purpose of impeaching Donald Trump.
And given the choice of definitely alienating her base and possibly turning off swing voters, Pelosi will always choose her base.
In politics, you have nothing without your base.
Impeachment could cost the Democrats the 2020 election.
But if they don’t press forward with this doomed crusade then enough of their base will sit on their hands next November that defeat is guaranteed.
Pelosi embracing impeachment also means impeachment – and Hunter Biden’s conduct in Ukraine – become the defining issues of the 2020 campaign.
That is not good news for Joe Biden and is another body blow to his already struggling campaign.
